Slave TradersReport

English:Slave Traders · Factions

The faction that treats people as stock. They buy, capture and work slaves on farms and in mines, and the whole supply chain runs on the tolerance of the Traders Guild, the United Cities and the Holy Nation.

Slavery blesses us with wealth, with luxury, with food on our plates. If it weren't for our slaves, who would toil in the fields? Our resources would be wasted on us. With slavery we can appreciate and utilize our arable soils, our abundant minerals and our fair climate. We are what we are because of slavery. — Lord Inaba, The Blessing Of Slavery

The Slave Traders are a faction composed of the practitioners of slavery. They do three things: trade slaves, capture slaves, and work them on farms and in mines.

They have close ties to most factions that engage in the practice, above all the Holy Nation and the United Cities.

Who stands behind them

This is the key to understanding the faction: the Slave Traders are not an independent organisation.

The Traders Guild wields overwhelming influence over them — every character titled 'Slave Master' or 'Slave Mistress' holds membership in the Guild. Seen that way, the Slave Traders are essentially a department of the Traders Guild.

Two smaller factions exist directly to support their commerce:

And there is an institutional pipeline: the Samurai Police allow prisoners in United Cities police stations to be handed over to the Slave Traders. Being convicted in the United Cities may end not in a cell but in a mine.

Standing opposite them are the Anti-Slavers under Tinfist, at -100 — the mortal enemies of this faction and all its allies.

TipFandom draws an observation from this table: the Slave Traders have recorded relations (0) rather than blanks with the Holy Nation and Western Hive, and can take over Holy Nation settlements — hinting at dealings the game never spells out. In particular, they share the Holy Nation's exact opinion of Mongrel.

Their holdings

The Slave Traders run several outposts of their own across the world, from markets to farms and mines:

Eyesocket, Port North, Port South, Slave Farm, Slave Farm South, Slave Markets, Stone Camp, South Stone Camp.

Slaver caravans patrol the following zones: Grey Desert, Heng, Stormgap Coast, The Great Desert and The Hook.

What happens when you meet them

For most players the Slave Traders will not attack unprovoked — they are merchants, not bandits. But two aspects of the faction do reach the player directly:

One: you can sell people to them. The player can sell captives to slavers at certain locations, which makes a steady income stream.

Two: their goods are cheap. Many items in Slave Trader towns are priced well below the usual market:

GoodsPrice
Building Materials50%
Copper50%
Iron Plates50%
Raw Iron50%
Raw Stone50%
Cactus40%
Cotton40%
Wheatstraw40%
Sake150%

The price of that is the contraband rules. Carrying the following inside Slave Trader territory incurs penalties:

ContrabandValue
Bloodrum400% (illegal)
Hashish600% (illegal)
Hemp400% (illegal)
NoteThis matters for smuggling routes: hauling hashish north out of The Swamp means crossing Slave Trader checkpoints with 600%-value contraband in your pack. The most profitable cargo is also the most expensive to be caught with.

Armour quality

The armour on sale in Slave Trader shops is poor:

QualityChance
Prototype~24.7%
Shoddy~49.5%
Standard~24.7%
High~0.9%
Specialist / Masterwork0%

In short: they sell volume, not quality. Do not come here for good gear.

How to ally with them (and how to offend them)

ImportantBuying slaves raises your standing. It is one of the very few mechanics in the game where paying for people also buys reputation, and it is a moral trap in its own right: you can buy slaves and then unshackle them, but every purchase still scores points for this faction.

World states

Whether slaver caravans exist in a given zone depends on whether specific people are alive and free. To make the caravans in a region stop, deal with the corresponding names:

ZoneMust kill or imprison
Grey DesertLongen, Slave Master Grande
HengLongen, Slave Master Ruben, Slave Mistress Ren
Stormgap CoastSlave Master Grande
The Great DesertLady Kana, Longen, Slave Master Haga
The HookSlave Market Master, Slave Mistress Grace

The reverse also holds: if Tinfist is killed while Longen is alive, slaver caravans start expanding into the Northern Coast, Sinkuun, Skimsands, Skinner's Roam, Shem and The Outlands.

Every intervention you make on this line redraws the distribution of slaver caravans on the map — in which direction depends on who you go after first.

Depending on world states, the Slave Traders can also take over settlements that were never theirs, including Cult Village, the Fishing Village, the Distant Hive Village, Holy Farms, Holy Mines and Settled Nomads.

Notable people

Recruits include Headshot, plus generic Cooks, Engineers, Farmers, Gunners, Medics and Swords for hire.
