The most widespread small herbivore on the continent, usually found in groups of about eight and easily recognised by their bony faceplates. They look like a free meal and are anything but — plenty of new characters go down to their first goat.

Goats are small herbivores that roam free in many parts of the world, usually in groups of around 8. They look much like real-world goats except for their prominent bony faceplates.

They are both wild animals and livestock — domesticated goats are mostly kept by the Nomads.

Where they appear

Wild goats have one of the widest distributions of any animal in the game:

Border Zone, Darkfinger, Forbidden Isle, Greyshelf, Hidden Forest, Northern Coast, Royal Valley, Shun, Sinkuun, Sniper Valley, Stobe's Gamble, The Hook, The Unwanted Zone.

Goats do not have nests. Unlike Blood Spiders or River Raptors, you cannot clear an area by levelling a nest — they simply keep roaming the region.

Do not treat them as a free meal

This is the single most important thing about goats: they are far tougher than their numbers suggest.

Their combat stats are only 10, which looks about the same as a starting character. In practice something is clearly off:

Body partHealth
Head52.5 – 159.75
Chest52.5 – 159.75
Stomach35 – 106.5
Limbs35 – 106.5

An adult goat can carry up to 159.75 health on a single body part — higher than a good many human bandits. Add a heal rate of 2 and self-healing, and the damage you deal grows back.

For damage, the goat's cut formula is:

Cut = 18 + 0.78 – 0.90 × (Martial Arts + Dexterity)

The 18 is 13 minimum cut damage plus 5 piercing damage. Fandom records a specific piece of trivia: at identical stats, a goat does exactly the same damage as a Bonedog.

NoteA starting character taking on a group of eight goats alone usually ends up trampled unconscious. They move at 10–21 mph (faster than you), do not slow down in combat, and will fight back to the end. The classic beginner mistake is "it's only a goat" — a sentence that does not hold in Kenshi.

The good news is that they do not hunt and will not eat a downed character. You can simply walk around them.

Drops and value

Per kill: Animal Skin ×2, Raw Meat ×7.

That is a very healthy yield — seven raw meat will feed a small squad for a while, and animal skin is the base material for armour crafting and easy money. For a party that already has two or three fighters, goat herds are a steady and safe supply line.

Buying a goat

Goats can be bought from:

As with all tamed animals in Kenshi (and many real goats), domesticated goats will happily eat any type of food at all.

What a goat is for in a squad

Goats are a niche but not worthless choice. They cannot haul goods and are not as sturdy or strong as a Bonedog — but they are:

Which makes their sensible use expendable scouts and kiters, or a low-maintenance option for early base defence.

Cornelius

Cornelius is a unique goat, available in the Settled Nomad Village in Dreg. The Nomad Animal Trader sells him for 15,000 Cats, but if you first find his owner, the Goat Man, in a nearby hideout building, he will offer half off.

Aye, seems to have taken a liking to ya. He's a clever fella, deserves to go out into the world, spread his wings, not stay couped up in an old town like this. Wanna buy him? I'll sell him to ya for a special price. — Goat Man

Cornelius has base stats slightly above an average goat, but takes almost twice as long to mature to Elder. Otherwise, he is just a goat.

The Tower of Goats

The Tower of Goats stands in Sinkuun and is full of goats — 20 to 30 hostile adult goats. It only appears on your map after reading a Tech Hunters Map, and the goats inside are aggressive by default.

Its value lies in holding one of the game's two Half-Eaten Ancient Science Books, plus an additional intact Ancient Science Book.

TipThirty goats in one tower is not a joke. Given their limb health and self-healing, this is a genuine attrition fight and makes a fair benchmark for a mid-game party.

A field that was never removed

Fandom records a piece of development residue: goats — like other non-pack domestic animals — have a backpack slot that the developers never intended to keep. The player cannot interact with it; you can see the slot, and that is all.
