Site layout, search technique, article conventions and what the link colours mean. Three minutes and you will know where everything is.

This site is deliberately laid out like a traditional encyclopaedia, with navigation on the left, body text in the middle and an infobox on the right. Below is what each region is for, plus a few operations that will save you a lot of time.

Site structure

The fixed top bar holds three things: the site name (click it to return home), the search box, and the 🌓 theme toggle on the right. Your theme choice is stored in the browser and carries over to your next visit.

The left-hand navigation column has two halves. The upper half is the site-wide entry points:

The lower half is the subject portals (World and History, Factions, Races, Characters, Locations, Game Mechanics, Items and Equipment, Creatures and so on), each listing its own articles directly. The navigation column only shows the first few, and for the complete list you should use "All Articles".

When the screen is not wide enough (phones, narrow windows) the navigation column moves above the body text automatically, and infoboxes and images switch to full-row width.

Search technique

The search box matches as you type, but you need to know what it matches before you can use it well.

ImportantSearch only matches article titles, English original names, aliases and category names. It does not search body text.

A few useful conclusions follow from that:

What an article is made of

A standard article runs, from top to bottom:

  1. Title bar: the article name, with the English original name and its subject in small text below.
  2. Infobox: the table floating at the top right, holding the most essential fields (leader, capital, territory, race and so on), good for quick reference.
  3. Bold summary: one sentence on what this article is. If you are in a hurry, this line is enough.
  4. Table of contents: appears once there are three or more sections, and lets you jump straight to one.
  5. Body: the narrative, in sections.
  6. Sources box: the grey box listing the corresponding wiki pages and videos for this article, clickable for verification.
  7. Category row: at the very bottom. Clicking any category jumps to the matching section of the Category Index.

Hovering over a section heading reveals a § symbol, and clicking it gives you a direct link to that section, which is handy for sharing a specific passage. Clicking an image opens it at original size in a new tab.

Colour / styleMeaning
BlueAn article that exists, click to go straight there
PurpleAn article you have already visited
RedA red link, this article has not been written yet
Text followed by ↗External link, opens in a new tab

Red links are the normal state of an encyclopaedia, not a fault. They mean the concept is already planned here and already cited by other articles, but nobody has written the content yet. Clicking a red link does not produce an error page, it takes you to "All Articles" so you can find another route yourself, and hovering over it shows what that article was meant to be called. The fewer red links there are, the more complete the coverage.

How to read the callout boxes

There are three kinds of box in the body text and they mean different things, so do not read them interchangeably.

TipBlue. Supplementary notes, reading suggestions, directions to follow up. Skipping it will not affect your understanding.
NoteYellow. The accounts here disagree in the source material itself, or there is significant uncertainty. When you see this box, what follows is not settled.
ImportantRed. A key premise or an easily misread point, and skipping it will lead you to misread.

Separately, the quote blocks in the body (italic passages with a vertical rule on the left) are always quotations of in-game text, such as book aphorisms, character lines and item descriptions. That is the game speaking, not this site's judgement, and as Disclaimer and Lore Reliability notes, characters in the game lie a great deal.

A suggested reading path

For readers meeting Kenshi's setting for the first time, we suggest reading in this order:

  1. The World of Kenshi: what kind of planet this is and why it looks like this.
  2. History of Kenshi: the order of the two civilisational collapses.
  3. The First Empire and The Second Empire: the source of every power that exists today.
  4. Factions and Races: the contemporary landscape.
  5. After that, follow your interest into a single faction (The Holy Nation, United Cities, Shek Kingdom) or a character article.

Readers who already know the setting and only want a particular dispute clarified should go straight to Disclaimer and Lore Reliability, and first work out which claims the game states outright and which the community has inferred.
