GarretReport
English:Garret · Characters
A slave trader who brings his own slave into the bar and buys him a drink. When a colleague accuses him of being a slave lover, he changes his story on the spot — the man is merely carrying his luggage.
Garret is a unique character within the Slave Traders faction. He is not a boss, not a shopkeeper, and cannot be recruited — the sole reason he exists is to perform a bar scene lasting a few dozen seconds.
The scene
In the slaver bar in Eyesocket or in the Slave Markets, Garret sits at a table with his own slave beside him, and buys the man a bottle of sake.
His explanation is that this slave has been working hard lately and deserves a small reward, because "a happy slave is a good slave".
The other slavers at the table plainly find the sight peculiar. They start jeering, saying that sort of talk sounds like something a "slave lover" would say.
Whereupon Garret instantly retracts the entire theory he has just finished expounding:
I ain't no slave lover. This un's just havin' a drink while he carries my baggage, that's all...
One sentence puts the fire out, and the subject is closed.
Why the scene earns an entry
Kenshi rarely relies on sermonising to make its point about slavery. Garret's scene compresses the whole institution into one very small gesture: a slaver wants to be a little kinder to his own property, and finds he must withdraw it immediately in front of his colleagues.
What actually gets punished is not cruelty but softness. Nobody is hurt in this scene and nobody is beaten, yet it stages the disciplinary machinery of a slave society more clearly than any flogging could — the binding force comes not from the law but from the two or three tables sitting nearby.
One reading holds that "a happy slave is a good slave" is itself not a kindness but an efficiency calculation: what he cares about is output, not the person. That reading fits the game's consistent portrayal of the merchant guild system, but the game never settles Garret's motives either way.
In practice
Garret is entirely meaningless in combat. All his attributes and skills fall in the 0 to 10 band, with Athletics a little higher (5 to 15), while Toughness and Perception may even be negative — this is about the closest the game comes to an ordinary human stat line.
He carries an Iron Club and an Advanced First Aid Kit. Beyond that there is nothing worth taking and no bounty to collect.
The figure beside him, Garret's slave, is likewise a unique character with his own separate entry: a Greenlander wearing nothing but a rag loincloth and a set of prisoner shackles. The two are generated as a pair — no Garret, no slave.
