A major Tech Hunter city built on a raised platform in the south-east quadrant of the continent. It is the last normal town on the route toward the Ashlands, and it stocks a wider range of backpacks than anywhere else in the game.
Flats Lagoon is one of the major towns controlled by the Tech Hunters, the whole settlement raised on a platform held up by a set of thick pillars, with a single long ramp in and out. For the overwhelming majority of players its significance is exactly one thing: this is the last place you can buy anything before heading south-east into the Ashlands.
A Relatively Safe Tile
By the standards of the continent's south-east quadrant, the Flats Lagoon zone is almost absurdly safe. The town itself is barely ever attacked by beasts or bandits, the zone spawns no camps or animal nests, and there are no ancient ruins. Out in the field you will mostly meet wolf packs, Boneyard Wolves, Land Bats, garru families, Beak Thing groups and Gorillo Bandits, at only 0.75x the standard density.
The environmental figures are equally middling: 50% water, 50% fertility, 50% aridity, 50 stone, 50 iron, 60 copper. This is a patch of land where nothing stands out and nothing is missing.
That Platform Is Player-Buildable
The raised "lagoon platform" style of Flats Lagoon is not exclusive scenery — players can build it at their own outposts[V1 0:00:33]. Someone who has actually done it advises against making a straight copy of Flats Lagoon: rather than replicating one large platform, stack several platforms at different heights and build a terraced city. He also points out the hardest part of the structure to handle — the deck is completely flat and wide open, and unless you pack it full it just looks desolate[V1 0:00:33].
That piece of practical experience also explains, in reverse, why Flats Lagoon itself looks so dense: what makes a raised city feel like a city is not the platform but how crowded the platform is.
The Gateway to the Ashlands
The barman at the Flats Lagoon bar is one of the few people in the game willing to talk about the Ashlands.
"The Ashlands are to the south-east... that's the ultimate expedition for any professional Tech Hunter. You could say it's precisely because nobody can get there that lunatics like us want to go all the more. Except the Ashland drifters, of course — but they've been gone a long time." — Lagoon Barman
In practice most of what he offers is not information about the Ashlands themselves but about the handful of zones you have to cross on the way. This is the game's consistent approach: nobody describes the destination, because nobody has come back from it.
His greeting to the player is equally blunt: "Heading to the Ashlands? Then I imagine you'll be needing supplies."
Economy: Fed by Hive Caravans
Flats Lagoon is the only zone in the game where all three Western Hive caravan types appear at once — survival goods, raw materials and crops, all three lines running. The reasonable inference is that a substantial share of this city's supply comes from the Western Hive. That also makes Flats Lagoon's prices and stock composition visibly different from inland towns.
A few practical conclusions:
- The widest range of backpacks in the game. Anything from the Scavenger's Basket and Wooden Backpack through the Trader's Wooden Backpack to the Bull Backpack and Garru Backpack can turn up.
- The travel and repair shops sell Research Artifacts and robotic limbs, which is quite rare in the south-east quadrant.
- The bar's map stock includes the Shek Kingdom map, the Swamp map, the United Cities (Outer Territories) map, the Vain map, and route maps to Mongrel and World's End.
- The town has two Battery Stations, convenient for recharging Skeleton characters.
Politics: Nothing Ever Changes
Flats Lagoon follows the general rule for Tech Hunter holdings: no world state can change who owns it. Whether the Empire collapses, the Hive Queen dies or the Holy Nation falls, this town opens for business as usual. For players who want a supply point that will never change, that is a very important property.
What It Means for the Player
- Chad — a unique recruit who reliably appears in the town bar. He has no weapon and claims he made it to the south-east corner of the map, ran into a Beak Thing, punched it in the nose and ran away. Recruitment fee 9,000 Cats; his personality field reads "stupid".
- The United Cities Pacifier is stationed here permanently, and is the repair window after your relations with the Empire break down.
- Only one building can be bought, a small house at 4,000 Cats.
- Flats Lagoon is one of the locations the Tech Hunters Map may mark; that map sells for 1,000 Cats.
- The town also spawns Silvershade, the Wall Man, the Bard and other recruits shared across several Tech Hunter towns.
