The signature unique recruit of the Flats Lagoon bar. He carries nothing in either hand and asks nine thousand cats, on the grounds that "you want raw power, you're gonna have to pay for it".
Chad is a Unique Recruit who reliably appears in the bar at Flats Lagoon. His hands are empty — he carries no weapon of any kind — and he asks nine thousand cats.
You want me on team, eh? Well, these fists don't come cheap, rookie. You want raw power, you're gonna have to pay for it. 9,000 Cats.
What nine thousand cats buys
Look at the ledger first. His attributes are Strength 18, Toughness 15, Dexterity 22, Perception 1; all six weapon skills sit at 15, Martial Arts at 20 and Dodge at 24, and most of the rest stops somewhere around 15 as well.
Those numbers are not impressive in a mid-game city. The same nine thousand cats will hire a whole squad of mercenaries in Flats Lagoon or Mourn; and once Chad joins, you still have to spend more to buy him a weapon and armour — the set he arrives in is [Shoddy] 95% of the time, and [Standard] only 5%.
His own account of himself
According to his recruitment dialogue, Chad claims to have travelled into the south-eastern corner of the map, run into Beak Things there, punched one of them in the nose and got away.
There is no corroboration for this whatsoever. Beak Things are among the most notorious wild killers in the game and can eat an entire mid-game squad when they turn up in a pack, while Chad's combat numbers are in the teens. His personality field reads "Dumb" — a tag that in-game shapes a character's small talk and reactions, and placed next to that anecdote the effect is fairly direct.
Beyond the recruitment dialogue, Chad has no lines of his own. He triggers no world states and has no follow-up story.
Why people buy him anyway
Because he is easy to find.
Most unique recruits are randomly generated, are not guaranteed to appear, and are not even guaranteed to have a fixed name. Chad spawns in the same bar every time, with a fixed name and fixed lines, which makes him the least troublesome option for a squad that has just come down from the direction of the Ashlands and wants a body in the south-east corner.
On top of that, he is a Scorchlander. The subrace has decent Dexterity and thievery bonuses, so for a player aiming at a thief or crossbow build the race means more than the raw numbers do.
