World's EndReport
English:World's End · Locations
A giant waystation built on a mountaintop in the Arm of Okran, the northern stronghold of the Tech Hunters and home of the University of Machinists — a heretical city that dodges Holy Nation religious scrutiny behind two fake statues.
World's End stands on a mountaintop on the western side of the Arm of Okran, inside Holy Nation territory, and looks like a waystation scaled up several times over. It is controlled by the Tech Hunters and is simultaneously the seat of the University of Machinists — which is to say that the densest concentration of ancient technology and banned books in the world happens to be piled up in the belly of the nation that hates technology most.
The two statues at the south gate
Two statues stand at the southern edge of town, resembling Okran or Holy Lord Phoenix. The official explanation from Finch, leader of the Machinists, is blunt: they are there for the Holy Nation to look at. He believes this much of a façade is enough to convince Holy Nation authorities that the people inside are devout, and thus to stop them asking what is stacked up behind the walls.
Whether that explanation holds water, the game deliberately leaves open. Given how the Holy Nation operates — bag searches at the gates, checkpoints on the roads, and "acting devout" often not being enough on its own — it is hard to imagine a stockpile of contraband technology this large going entirely unnoticed. At the very least the Holy Nation's own building materials trader knows: ask him about ancient science books and he will glance around before saying that the stuff is banned here, don't mention it, go north and ask at World's End.
What is certain is the consequence: this is the only place inside Holy Nation borders where robotic limbs can be bought openly, and there are large numbers of skeletons standing inside its walls — while anywhere else in Holy Nation territory, a skeleton is killed on sight.
The University of Machinists
The Machinists are a body of scholars whose goal is to reconstruct the history of the world and return lost technology to the living. Their method is not monopoly but writing it down and putting it out there. The organisation is also an ally of the Tech Hunters, and its headquarters is the large science laboratory inside World's End[V1 0:01:32].
- Finch — a Hive Prince and head of the university[V1 0:01:32], author of The Great Extinction I, The Lost Ancients I, Mysteries of Skeleton Tech I and The Cannibal Plains: A Devolution of Man?, among others. His pattern as a writer is to pose interesting questions and leave later scholars to finish them.
- Iyo — a skeleton (P4 unit), the university's second-in-command and its public face[V2 0:05:04]. Finch calls him "my assistant", but he is a chassis built during the First Empire that lived through the whole of the Second, and watched his world be destroyed twice with his own eyes[V1 0:01:32] — he is not merely a compiler of historical material, he is primary source material.
Scholars cannot survive outside, so the dangerous parts are outsourced to the Tech Hunters. The university in fact employs most of the Tech Hunters in town, and relations between the two factions sit at +100.

What Iyo is hiding
Among the skeletons, the few who still retain distant memories have become scholars, and Iyo is the most famous of them. But his attitude to memory is the opposite of the other scholars': he treats concealing certain fragments of history as his own duty[V3 0:15:52][V2 0:05:04].
This does not have to be inferred; he says it himself, very directly:
Look, you don't need to worry... no one will ever know the truth. As long as I am Finch's second-in-command, I will see to that myself. — Iyo
The reason he gives is the protection of knowledge necessary for human survival[V4 0:07:18]; and in the library he administers, the player can indeed pick up a book so thoroughly ruined with spilled ink that nothing can be read from it[V4 0:07:18].
Which fragment he is hiding, and why, the game does not say. The most common speculation is that it is to prevent hostility and discrimination between the peoples from flaring up again — once a thousand-year-old grudge is reopened, peace between humans and skeletons may not hold[V3 0:15:52][V2 0:05:04]. That motive is interpretation, not game text.
The library at Science HQ
The barrels and chests inside Science HQ hold a large quantity of lore books, making it one of the densest concentrations of historical documents in the game. Three sets have a clear internal sequence:
- the Mysteries of Skeleton Tech series
- the Great Extinction series
- the Lost Ancients series and the Okranite Theories in Relation to Findings series
The rest includes Cultural Divergence and Evolution, Legends, Tech Hunter's Notes and The Cannibal Plains: A Devolution of Man?.
Iyo himself is the author of several entries in Tech Hunter's Notes; the player can also simply ask him about the history of this world.
Law and order: a town with no prison
World's End's guards are hired ninjas. There is no prison in town, but imperial law applies in a very loose form — troublemakers get a United Cities bounty put on them.
On the ground the rule is close to a dead letter: bounties are not enforced inside the town, and plenty of the Tech Hunters in town are carrying imperial bounties of their own.
What it means for the player
- The largest commercial district inside the Holy Nation. An armour shop, a headgear shop, a robotics shop, a ranger shop, a weapon shop, and travel and repair shops, plus four bars-cum-waystations, two hydroponic farms and a battery station.
- This is one of very few locations in Holy Nation territory that sells robotic limbs, and its shops have a very small chance of stocking ancient science books.
- Purchasable buildings: a small shack at 4,000 Cats, an L-shaped house at 28,000 Cats.
- Shek Kingdom pacifiers are stationed here permanently, making it the place to repair relations after a break with the Shek.
- If you cannot find the way, buy a Map to World's End for 750 Cats.
- Old Hobbs has a chance to spawn here, and will join up for free.

| ↑ Okranites are known for being zealous with regards to investigating heresies, ranging from gate guard bag searches to patrol interrogations, where a show of faith is sometimes insufficient to convince them without further searches. It's hard to fathom that the large presence of technologies flew completely under their radar. | — |
