Hive QueenReport
English:Hive Queen · Characters
The only Hiver capable of reproduction and the source of the entire race's sanity; two are left in the world, and the death of either erases a whole civilisation.
The Hive Queen is the only Hiver capable of reproduction, and the source of an entire Hive's sanity and order. Only two exist anywhere in Kenshi: The Queen, who rules the Western Hive, and the Queen of the South, who rules the Southern Hive.
"Eeeeeeeeee!"
That is the whole of their dialogue. Both Queens communicate exclusively by screeching and have never spoken a recognisable word.
Physiology: a half-mechanical egg-laying apparatus
To understand why a Queen is irreplaceable you have to accept one biological premise: the Hive technically has neither sex nor reproductive organs and cannot breed by any conventional means[V1 0:02:49]. The continuation of the entire race rests on one individual.
Two features separate the Queen from every other Hiver:
- Six antennae — an ordinary Hiver has one
- A dispenser unit — an artificial metal canister attached to her torso, paired with circular metal plates running down her spine. Every Hiver is born out of this device, which is very likely where the eggs are laid[V2 0:03:34]
She is therefore described as a half-organic, half-mechanical hybrid: at once the ruler of the Hive and its production equipment[V2 0:03:34].
Reproduction is by parthenogenesis: the Queen produces offspring without mating. If one of her eggs is fertilised by another Hiver, a new Queen may be born — the only known mechanism of generational succession the Hive possesses.
One curious technical fact: internally the Queen is classed as a robot, cannot be treated with bandages and requires a Skeleton Repair Kit. She nevertheless still needs to eat, her hunger value simply being hidden. Lock a Queen in a player cage without feeding her and she will starve to death — her hunger rate is 3.0, over five times that of an ordinary Hiver. She is also the only robotic race that will swim.
The Queen is the slowest subrace in the game at a top speed of just 6.7 mph. She has nowhere to go.

The two Queens
The two Queens have identical statistics — Strength 60–68, Toughness 35–45, dismal Perception, and every combat skill landing in the 35–45 band. This exact match is not laziness; the Wiki treats it as evidence that the two were very likely manufactured from the same template.
| The Queen (Western) | Queen of the South | |
|---|---|---|
| Seat | The "Hill Hut" on an island west of Vain | The Hive throne at the southern end of Royal Valley |
| Guard | Royal Soldier Drones | Elite Droneguards |
| Armament | None | A Meitou-grade polearm, made by Cross |
| Mode of rule | Rules alone, everything delegated to the Princes | Co-rules with her consort, the King |
| Towards intruders | Guards demand you leave but stay non-hostile | Guards attack on sight |
The Queen sits atop a strange throne surrounded by Royal Soldier Drones. When the player steps into the Hill Hut the guards gasp, close in and demand that you leave — but even if you refuse, they will not start a fight. Only the instant the Queen takes damage does the whole island detonate:
"Aaaah! Protect the Queen! …This cannot be happening!" — Royal Soldier Drone
The Queen of the South is the exact opposite: classed as a boss, with guards who attack on sight. Her skin colour is not the pink common to Southern Hivers but identical to her Western cousin's — which is itself taken as evidence for the inference that the two Queens share an origin and that the colour difference comes from breeding biomass rather than lineage.

Pheromones: rule made invisible
The Queen's real instrument of power is not force but pheromones. Once her offspring have been mass-produced by the incubation apparatus inside her, this chemical signal is what strings them into a single group consciousness[V1 0:02:49], making every Worker, Soldier and Prince obey unconditionally — and giving them a sense of belonging and purpose in return. Stretch or sever the link and the individual gradually develops a will of its own, while falling into emptiness at the same time.
The paradox is that the Queen herself is almost never seen in her own society. The Hive Prince's official description is blunt about it:
Nobody has ever really seen the Queen, it is always the Princes who run things.
The Queen does not tour, does not speak, does not administer. What she supplies is fertility and sanity; everything else goes to the Princes. That makes her closer to an organ than to a monarch.
One commentator infers her value system from the distribution of defensive resources: virtually all of the Hive's fortifications and elite troops are concentrated on the single island where the Queen sits, while the outlying Hive Villages are essentially undefended[V3 0:24:04]. On this reading, the Queen regards individuals as consumables that can always be produced again, and Hive "national security" amounts in practice to queen security — a village lost can be regrown, but a Queen lost leaves nothing. This is interpretation rather than established lore, though it lines up perfectly with the kill-switch world state described in the next section.
Killing a Queen: the off switch for a civilisation
The Queens are the highest-leverage targets in Kenshi. They carry no bounty and no narrative build-up, but the fall of either one rewrites the map directly.
After The Queen is killed or kidnapped:
- All Hive Villages and Distant Hive Villages become Deadhive Overruns
- Fogman death fields begin spawning in Dreg, Okran's Gulf and Vain
- Hive bandits, Lost Princes and Lost Hivers scatter across a dozen-plus regions
- Farm trader and materials trader events stop permanently
- If kidnapped, the Western Hive launches a revenge siege of nine squads of nine Soldier Drones each, returning 24–48 hours after each failure
- If the Queen of the South is still alive, Southern patrols press the advantage into the Bonefields, Border Zone, Flats Lagoon, Okran's Gulf, The Hook, The Swamp and Vain
After the Queen of the South is killed or kidnapped:
- All Southern Hive settlements are overrun by Fogmen
- Southern Hive patrol spawns and the "Southern Hive Visit" and "Hive Eviction" events all stop
- If kidnapped, the King joins the siege in person (though thanks to a bug this version of him is far weaker than the one in Royal Valley)

Open questions
- Why has the Holy Nation put no bounty on her? The Holy Nation explicitly mentions in Volume 6 of The Guiding Light that Hivers worship "their false goddess, or 'Queen'", so her existence is known intelligence. Yet Holy Lord Phoenix and the Inquisitors have never issued a single bounty on her. The Wiki finds this genuinely puzzling too
- How many Queens were there originally? The game presents only two living Queens, but the existence of the Deadhive implies at least a third Hive once operated and lost its Queen. Fan research circulates the claim that three Queens were originally created and scattered; treat it as a narrative reference, not as stated lore
- Who made them? The mainstream guess points to a late Second Empire genetic engineering programme, with renegade Skeletons, native species and seaborne migrants as alternatives. See the origins section of the Hive article
