Fishing VillageReport

English:Fishing Village · Locations

The Deadcat faction's fishing village — and there are two of them, identically named. One is a shack-and-pier hamlet on the Northern Coast, the other a walled village in The Outlands. They share the same four unique recruits, and the same ending — kill Tinfist and both fly the slavers' flag.

Fishing Village is a settlement of the Deadcat faction. There are two of them in Kenshi, half a map apart — same name, same faction, same roster of unique recruits, and almost nothing else in common.

Two villages

The one on the Northern Coast

The first sits on the Northern Coast, north of World's End. It is a quaint seaside town: wooden piers running out into the water, shacks lining the shore, and small herds of goats wandering about outside. It has a bar, a general item trader, and a fish salesman.

What the residents complain about is the Cannibals nearby. The Northern Coast sits between the Cannibal Plains and Darkfinger, so Cannibals drift in from other regions and the Cannibal Hunters who chase them follow along. Squads of Tech Hunters and Flotsam Ninjas are also common here — the Tech Hunters usually setting out from World's End to probe the Cannibal Plains and the Leviathan Coast.

This is the only settlement on the entire Northern Coast with the lights still on: the region's other Deadcat village, Ghost Village, has already been emptied.

The one in The Outlands

The second sits in The Outlands, east of Black Scratch, and it is a walled village. The threats swap out for Grass Pirates and Reavers. So do the services — this one has only a bar and two fish shops.

NoteGet knocked out by Reavers in The Outlands and there is a high chance you are enslaved on the spot and stripped of your gear. Watch your encumbrance on the way to this village — if you cannot run, you have already lost.

Deadcat — fishermen who lost their city

Deadcat is a tiny faction scattered across a handful of small villages on the Northern Coast and around Dreg. They were once the inhabitants of the city of Deadcat, until the ravenous Cannibal tribes took it from them. What is left is, functionally, a faction of refugees.

Most survivors took up fishing to stay alive. The wiki's description is blunt: generally good people, but times have been hard on them — which is why they come across as distant and untrusting of outsiders.

The faction relation table says the rest. Deadcat sits at −100 toward the Cannibals (maximum hatred) and −50 toward the Dust Bandits. Member race weights are Scorchlander 200, Greenlander 70, Shek 10.

A Lo-Fi developer once described the Deadcats on the forums as "Rebel Descendants", without saying whose rebels. Working backwards from the name, one common theory is that they descend from the people who broke away from the Second Empire and Cat-Lon.

What's here

The village has four building types: Deadcat Bar, Deadcat Civilian, Deadcat Fish Shop and Deadcat Big Shop.

TipThe Deadcat Big Shop is the only general trader in this part of the world. Step outside the village and the entire Northern Coast has no trade point at all — stock up in one go.

Who lives here — four unique recruits

The village's most practical value is that it is a spawn point for four unique recruits at once. For a young squad, that is a very high recruit density in one place.

CharacterCostNotes
HobbsFreeA crazy old man full of legends. Play along with his stories and he joins for nothing; insult him or tell him to leave and you lose the chance permanently. Maniacal personality, above-average stats, and one of the earliest followers most players ever get
Horse4,500 CatsA Shek treasure hunter recuperating in the village after Cannibals wiped out his squad. His red facial war paint is seen on no other Shek warrior. Traitorous personality, with nine unique dialogue lines
Soman3,500 CatsA Greenlander woman from a failing family fishing business. She says she was piecing together blueprints before she learned to walk — she is a far better engineer than a fisherman
Green Finger2,000 CatsA farmer sick of living next door to the Cannibals, who wants to move to the Holy Nation and farm the fertile land along the river Wend. Fearful personality, and the cheapest unique recruit in the region

Kill Tinfist and the sign changes

The village has only one town override, but it is one of the cleanest cause-and-effect chains in the game:

Tinfist is killed or imprisoned while Emperor Tengu and Longen are both alive and free — and both Fishing Villages fall to the Slave Traders.

After the takeover the Deadcat Bar becomes a Slaver Bar, a Slave Farm Trader and a Slave Shop appear, and the Storm House in the village goes up for sale at 12,800 Cats. Both the Empire Southwest and Slavers trade cultures apply here.

A bar patron puts it this way:

So Tinfist finally bit the dust, eh.. Well, now the farms are safe we won't EVER go hungry again... Good riddance to 'im, I say.
ImportantThis world state is worth sitting with. The moment the man who fought slavery dies, the first place to become a slave holding is a refugee fishing village. When the Anti-Slaver leader falls, the first people to pay are not the Empire — they are the ones hiding at the edge of the map, catching fish.

An ownership bug nobody fixed

The wiki's trivia section records a data quirk: the Outlands Fishing Village is technically registered to the United Cities in its FCS data, which does not match the Deadcat ownership the game actually shows. It is considered an override bug, and the community mod Fixed Fishing Village exists specifically to resolve it.
