Trader's EdgeReport
English:Trader's Edge · Locations
The Traders Guild headquarters, built on a plateau and joined to Heng by a metal bridge. The Guild counts the money, the United Cities guards the door, and three slave camps keep the place fed.
Trader's Edge is a settlement in Heng, United Cities territory, which the wiki describes as a probable special economic zone. The reason is plain enough: the place is run by the Traders Guild, but the entrance is protected by the United Cities. The Empire supplies the soldiers; the Guild takes the cut.
Location: the plateau on the far side of the bridge
Trader's Edge stands on a plateau beside the city of Heng, connected to it by a metal bridge. The geography is the town's character in miniature: pressed right up against the Empire's richest city, yet outside its walls. To get in you cross that bridge — and the Empire's troops are standing on it.
What is here
Six buildings in total, and every one of them is about the same two things: money and people.
The Traders Guild HQ is Longen's home and the reason the town exists. His Noble Squire Supreme, Yamdu, is inside as well and doubles as the Guild's membership desk.
The Bank is one of the most misleadingly named buildings in Kenshi. It is a Traders Guild vault with a maximum stock of 30 items on a 72-hour restock, closed to the public by day and by night, watched by five Traders Guards. It holds high-value goods such as Leviathan Pearls and a copy of the lore book Money is Freedom — but it provides no banking services whatsoever. The player cannot deposit, exchange or borrow here. Its artifacts value of about 25,000 Cats means it spawns extra loot on top.
Slave Shop — what is on sale here is people. Trader's Edge is a node on the United Cities slave network, not merely a warehouse district.
Empire Ranger Shop — crossbows and bolts in all four weights. This is the one shop in town that sells equipment to a player.
There is also a barracks and a general storage. One Bughouse in town is up for sale at 28,000 Cats.
Harmothoe's free-trader caravan frequently turns up in Trader's Edge or in neighbouring Heng, and can be traded with directly.
A supply line built on slaves
Trader's Edge produces nothing at all. It shares its lifeline with Heng, and that line runs from three places:
| Source | Nature | Run by |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Camp | Slave stone-mining camp | Slave Master Haga |
| South Stone Camp | Slave stone-mining camp | Slave Master 'Sly' Ruben |
| Eyesocket | Slave camp | Slave Master Grande |
That table is the fastest way to understand this town: the Empire's best money-making address eats slavery. The day all three slave masters fall, Trader's Edge and Heng starve together.
Four town overrides
Trader's Edge has one of the largest sets of overrides in the game, and each ending corresponds to a different list of the dead. The composition of its six buildings changes in every version:
| Version | Trigger | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Malnourished | Haga, Ruben and Grande all dead or imprisoned | The supply line breaks; the town stays under Traders Guild rule, with two buildings destroyed, two residential, one barracks and one Faction HQ |
| Destroyed | Longen dead or imprisoned while Emperor Tengu is alive and free | The settlement falls to ruins, still nominally under Traders Guild control |
| Anti-Slavers | Longen and Tengu both down while Tinfist is alive and free | The Anti-Slavers take over; the HQ becomes a prison, alongside a Ronin weapon shop, a ranger shop, a storage and a barrack |
| Empire Peasants | Longen, Tengu and Tinfist all down | The Empire Peasants take over, with Boss Simion seated in the Faction HQ and a tech lab on site |
Two details are worth remembering:
- The malnourished version stacks with the destroyed one — a ruined town can still starve, and a starving one can still be ruined.
- The Empire Peasants version puts the Ancient Lab up for sale at 320,000 Cats, making it the most expensive building in the game.
The destroyed version even leaves a line of dialogue behind, spoken by the Guild's own:
We done good, guys. We done good. Longen's dead... And now the world is our playground, muhaha!
Why it matters
- The starting point of the "Wandering Trader" game start. You have spent your savings on a backpack of trade goods and a pack animal: 0 Cats in hand, but 75 relations with the Traders Guild. You begin at the feet of the continent's best merchants without a single coin.
- Where you recruit Yamdu. He is free, but only after you have dealt with Tinfist and come back to talk to Longen.
- The clearest view of how the United Cities works. A town that makes nothing, a bank that does no banking, a shop that sells people, and imperial troops on the gate — all on one plateau.
Trivia
- Trader's Edge existed in the Alpha version of the game, where it was the closest town to the starting town of Brink. It is one of the few Old World locations that survived into the final release.
