Slave ShopReport

English:Slave Shop · Locations

The shop that sells people. A row of iron cages and a few chests for confiscated belongings, run by the Slave Traders and standard furniture in most United Cities settlements. You can buy here, sell here, or pick the cages open — that last one counts as terrorism.

A Slave Shop sells people. The premises are usually a row of iron cages with a few chests beside them holding what was taken off the occupants. The business belongs to the Slave Traders; the man behind the counter is the Slaver Boss, with two Slaver Guards standing over him.

In the United Cities slavery is a legal trade, so most settlements have one of these. The Holy Nation also uses slave labour, but no slave shops open in its cities.

Stock: anyone lying on the ground

A shop spawns with a handful of already shackled characters in it. After that the Slave Traders, Slave Hunters and Manhunters restock it — they pick up unconscious characters, carry them back, and put them in a cage. It runs the other way too: Slave Trader patrols will take people out of the shop and move them to a nearby slave camp.

One rule is worth remembering: they pick up anyone who is down, not only the ones they knocked down themselves.

ImportantIf one of your characters is knocked out inside or near a United Cities town, the police are not the only possible outcome, and neither is a squadmate arriving to carry them home. One Slave Trader patrol walking past is enough to put them in a cage. For what happens after you go down, see Prison and Escape.

Buying

The people in the cages can be bought, but buying one does not mean they join you. What you are actually paying for is their freedom, and the result is exactly the same as picking the cage yourself and unlocking the shackles — where they go next is their business.

Selling

The trade runs both ways. Carry an unconscious character in and the boss will take them: bandit-class characters such as Starving Vagrants and Rebel Farmers go for about 400 Cats each. Your own squad members sell too, at a price that varies with their skills.

Which characters can be sold and which cannot — military units and diplomats cannot — is covered in Slavery.

TipThis is the fastest money in the early game. Vagrants in the desert are numerous and weak, and one carried body is 400 Cats.

Picking the cages

Slave shops stay open all night, so sneaking in after dark to free people does not work. Someone is always watching.

Freed slaves generally do one of two things: sprint for the city gate, or follow you and wait to be led out. Both usually end with the town guards beating them down and putting them back in the same cage. If you actually want to save one, you have to escort them a fair distance beyond the walls — the ones that get that far can become recruits.

NotePicking cages is decent Lockpicking training, but being seen doing it counts as "terrorism" and puts a bounty on you. See Bounty and Crime.
