A United Cities town on the north-eastern coast of the Great Desert, built around natural lagoons and still shaped like the port it used to be. Lady Sanda governs from here — and the town has no Police Station, so anyone arrested goes straight into the Slave Shop's cages.
Bark is a United Cities town on the north-eastern coast of the Great Desert. It is built around a number of natural lagoons and still resembles a former port — though seaborne trade is no longer what keeps it running.
The single most important thing to know about it is not who lives here. It is that this town has no Police Station.
A town shaped like a port
Bark's economy is not self-sufficient: it runs on supplies brought in from both Port North and Port South. That structure tells you its place in the Empire — Bark is a consumer, not a producer.
As with many other northern cities, you can discover it simply by travelling there, or by acquiring and reading the Map of the United Cities (Central Territories).
Somewhere close to the centre of town there is one detail worth stopping for: a 'yard' of camp beds. The most likely reading is that these are slums for the homeless, thrown together either by the government or by the peasants themselves.
Lady Sanda and the Noble House
Lady Sanda lives in and governs from the town's Noble House.
The price of having no Police Station
This is the mechanic to remember about Bark, and one of the nastiest local rules in the game:
Because there is no Police Station here, if the player or any other NPC is arrested, they are taken directly to the cages of the Slave Shop and enslaved on the spot.
In other cities, being arrested means serving time, paying off a bounty and walking out. In Bark, being arrested means you have been sold. The difference is not the severity of the sentence; it is whether you still belong to yourself afterwards.
World states: four nobles, four faces
Bark changes with world states, and every trigger is tied to which nobles have been killed or imprisoned. The logic reduces to two sentences:
- As long as Sanda is alive, the town can at worst become Malnourished — and only if both Kana and Wada are dead. If she is then killed after that, the town switches to Empire Peasants control.
- If Sanda is dead, look at Tengu: with Tengu alive the town becomes Half-Destroyed; with Tengu also dead (or with Kana and Wada both dead) it likewise falls to the Empire Peasants.
As a table:
| World state | Condition |
|---|---|
| Normal | Sanda alive, and Kana and Wada not both dead |
| Malnourished | Sanda alive, Kana and Wada both dead |
| Half-Destroyed | Sanda dead, Tengu alive, and Kana and Wada not both dead |
| Empire Peasants | Sanda dead, and either Tengu dead or Kana and Wada both dead |
Note how Malnourished is reached: it requires no harm to Bark's own ruler at all, only cutting the two ports' supply lines. This town has outsourced its food security.
Trivia
- The town existed in the Alpha version of the game.
- Random NPCs can also be named Bark, including possible recruits — easy to misread when searching by name.
- The name may be a reference to the wood logs that occasionally float by the port.
- Going by Sanda's overall patrol spawn value, Bark can be considered the smallest of all six northern UC towns (her homeless spawn value is 24).
- It is the only northern UC town without an override to become half-destroyed when Tengu is killed.
