Zone Danger TiersReport

English:Zone Danger Tiers · Locations

Danger in Kenshi is three independent axes stacked on top of each other — enemy numbers, environmental damage, and what happens to you after you go down. This article lists the threat profile of each region and the real numbers behind harmful weather.

Kenshi never displays a zone level and never gives a warning. Judging whether a patch of land is survivable means reading three mutually independent things at once: how many enemies there are, whether the environment will kill you, and what happens once you are down. The third is the one most often overlooked — the same knockout costs you a backpack in the Border Zone and costs you the character permanently on the Cannibal Plains.

Axis one: the enemy spawn table

Every zone has a hard-coded "homeless spawn" list that determines which squads appear in the wild, how large they are and at what weight. None of it scales with the player's strength.

What actually kills you is usually not individual strength but numbers: Cannibals on the Cannibal Plains come in squads of 6–25, Scrawny Cannibals reach 10–35, and the Shrieking Bandits sharing the zone come in 9–26, so walking into 40+ hostiles at once is entirely normal. In the Fog Islands, the Fog Hive Roaming Squad is 7–21 Fogmen, and the Fog Hive Nest Hunter Patrol Huge runs 31–56.

The wiki gives one ordering of beast threat, low to high: Leviathan Coast → The Unwanted Zone → Gut → Bonefields → Arach.

Axis two: environmental damage

Only four weather types in the entire game deal real damage.

Acid Rain

The standard weather of polluted zones. It applies stun damage to organic body parts.

Coverage is wide, spanning more than twenty zones including the Deadlands, Iron Valleys, Darkfinger, Sonorous Dark, The Pits and The Pits East, The Unwanted Zone, Royal Valley, Greyshelf, Forbidden Isle and the Cannibal Plains.

Acid Ground

A separate problem from acid rain: in the Deadlands, Iron Valleys and Black Desert the ground itself is corrosive and deals blunt damage to the legs.

TipThe fix for acid ground is absurdly cheap: any pair of shoes gives full immunity. Hivers, Skeletons and robotic limbs are unaffected to begin with. Setting out for the Deadlands with an acid-proof coat and no shoes is a classic way to lose a squad.

Burning

Exists only in Venge. During the day, large beams sweep across the surface, cast by an orbital satellite that is still running (its twin has crashed at The Eye).

Dust Storms

No health loss, but a real combat penalty:

The flip side is that dust storms cut the vision range of every unit, making them prime stealth conditions. Headgear with 100% protection includes the Ashlander Stormgoggles, Fog Mask, Square Goggles and Samurai Helmet.

Gas

The rarest weather effect, found only in the Black Desert and the Ashlands, dealing stun damage to the chest.

ZoneCloud appearanceTime to take a Greenlander from full to 0
The Black DesertSmall, blackAbout 14 game minutes
AshlandsLarge, whiteAbout 20 game minutes
ImportantThree universal rules: one, indoors means immunity to every weather effect. Two, standing on the top floor of a building grants immunity to gas and burning. Three, the damage reduction from Toughness does absolutely nothing against weather damage — no amount of Toughness will keep gas out of your lungs.

Axis three: after you go down

The cruellest layer, and the one fewest players work out in advance: the same unconscious body is treated completely differently depending on who picks it up.

A few details worth remembering:

Zone danger tiers

The tiers below combine spawn-table size, weather damage and post-knockdown treatment. They are not official in-game values, and the felt difficulty shifts hugely with your squad's race, gear and running speed.

TierRepresentative zonesMain threatsSuggested threshold
1 · StarterBorder Zone, Okran's Pride, Shem, Flats Lagoon, Grey DesertWeak bandits, bonedogs, dust stormsNone
2 · GrowthThe Swamp, The Great Desert, Heng, Skimsands, Stenn Desert, Venge, etc.Gangs, slave hunters, skimmers, beak thingsCombat 30–40
3 · Full squadCannibal Plains, Fog Islands, Bonefields, Gut, The Outlands, Darkfinger, Leviathan Coast, etc.Mass dogpiles, Fogmen, beak thing packs, acid rain50+ across the squad and a full set of armour
4 · AdvancedArach, The Unwanted Zone, Venge, The Black Desert, Deadlands, Iron Valleys, Sonorous Dark, The Pits, etc.Seas of spiders, orbital beams, gas, acid ground, flayersPurpose-built protective gear plus high-end weapons
5 · EndgameAshlandsThe Skeleton Legion, gas, Cat-Lon and 120 StormthrallsTop-tier equipment and a willingness to lose everything
NoteRace rewrites this table outright. Skeletons are immune to acid rain, acid ground, burning and gas, and Fogmen will not drag them away, so a "tier 4" polluted zone is close to a stroll for them — but setting foot in a Holy Nation city means summary execution. Hivers are immune to acid yet cannot wear helmets, which means they cannot meaningfully protect themselves from gas or dust storms.
