Escaped Servants are people who got out of the Holy Nation's machinery. By faction they belong to the Holy Nation Outlaws, and their origins are exactly what the name says — Lower Servants from the Holy Mines, and slaves out of Rebirth.

What they used to be

Lower Servants are slaves inside the Holy Nation, mostly criminals sentenced to labour as repentance. They wear orange robes, work the Holy Mine sites, and are supervised by slavers the Holy Nation hires alongside its own Sentinels and Paladins.

Rebirth Slaves are those sent to Rebirth, and they come from every race except Skeletons — the Holy Nation holds that Skeletons have no soul and therefore cannot be reborn.

Those who escape either institution become the servants wandering the wilds. Most are still in Holy Servant Rags and a Stout Hessian Uniform, armed with an Iron Club, with a 20% chance of also carrying a Spring Bat. Their armour is almost always [Shoddy], with only a 5% chance of [Standard].

Seventy percent of them are women, which is unusual among hostile characters in Kenshi and follows directly from a state that treats women as property.

What happens when you meet them

They will usually attack a nearby squad, though somewhat less readily than an ordinary starving bandit. What they want is food, not a fight.

The bigger nuisance is their looting behaviour. When they find unconscious characters they search them and take every food item, and they will butcher any animal on the spot. Finish a hard fight, leave your squad lying down to recover, and a passing group of Escaped Servants can strip the whole party's rations.

Their stats sit at 10–20 with a ±5 spread, so any established squad handles them easily. The real threat is not their clubs; it is your supply line.

Where they spawn

They appear in groups of 1 to 8, showing up infrequently as homeless spawns in:

Border Zone, Cannibal Plains, Dreg, Fog Islands, Okran's Gulf, Okran's Pride, Okran's Valley, Skinner's Roam and Vain.

The Hub is nominally controlled by the Holy Nation Outlaws, so they also spawn there as patrol squads working the ground around the town. Dreg additionally hosts a dedicated variant, the Slave escapee.

They can be recruited

This is the detail worth remembering. When an Escaped Servant is alone in her squad and badly wounded, she will start a conversation with a player character nearby:

Help! Help me, please! I'm hurt, I need aid... I can barely walk... The dogs will eat me alive if you leave me out here! Take me with you, please... don't leave me like this... I've been through too much to die alone like this...

Pick the right responses and she joins the squad. Her starting numbers are poor, but recruitment is free, requires no bar visit, and requires no reputation — only that you happened to walk past at the right moment and were willing to bandage her first.

TipThis is the game turning Holy Nation slavery into a mechanic in the most direct way it can. The institution produces runaways, the runaways attack travellers to survive, and the player gets to choose between putting one down and picking one up.
