GhostReport
English:Ghost · Characters
Born Suchon, a warrior exiled from the Shek Kingdom after a defeat and now the leader of the Berserkers; his existence props up Berserker activity across the entire north, and he frequently ends up eaten by Skin Spiders.
"Ghost" is the leader of the Berserkers and a Shek. His camp is the Berserker village east of Last Stand, and around him are gathered a crowd of kinsmen who have likewise walked away from civilisation.
Suchon died long ago… the exile is lost, forever a ghost searching for the other side. — a Shek warrior's line on seeing the player carrying Ghost
A man who threw his own name away
Before his exile he was called Suchon, a warrior of the Shek Kingdom. By the game's account he was most likely struck from the rolls after a lost battle and driven out of the kingdom in disgrace — the standard procedure in Shek society for handling survivors of a defeat.
After his exile he became leader of the Berserkers, a body of Shek who reject civilisation altogether: they oppose not only Esata's ceasefire line but would gladly undo Kral's original unification as well.
And the name Suchon, in his own mind and in his people's, died along with that battle. He is now simply "Ghost" — an afterimage drifting through the world, looking for a far shore he will never reach. If the player ties him up and hands him over to the guards of the Shek Kingdom, a Shek warrior will recite that history on the spot.
Combat power and equipment
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Strength | 59.4 |
| Toughness | 64.8 |
| Dexterity | 43.2 |
| Six weapon skills | 54 |
| Melee Attack | 64.8 |
| Melee Defence | 54 |
| Dodge / Martial Arts | 4.3 / 5.4 |
His weapon is an Ancient-manufacture Fragment Axe, worth roughly 4,102 to 5,682 Cats. His armour is Shoddy grade only (a 5% chance of Standard), paired with a turban and an Armoured Rag Skirt dyed in the dark red of the Berserkers.
For a faction leader this is a distinctly threadbare kit — but then the Berserkers neither produce nor trade, and live entirely off what they take.
The bounty
The Shek Kingdom prices him at 10,000 Cats, plus +2 relations on delivery. He is the most common first "leader-class" target for a mid-game squad: poor equipment, low Dodge, and a camp that never moves.
After he falls
If Ghost is killed or carried off:
- Berserker roaming squads in Berserker Country, the Cannibal Plains, the Spider Plains and the Stenn Desert drop to half frequency, and all of them switch to a "battered" state;
- squad size shrinks from 2–8 down to 2–5.
While Ghost is alive:
- if High Inquisitor Seta is killed or imprisoned, Berserker patrols expand into the Okran's Gulf area;
- if Esata is killed or imprisoned, he relocates to Admag; and if Flying Bull and Mukai the Mountain also fall, he moves to Squin instead.
In other words, the whole of the northern Berserker pressure is tied to one man.
He often dies on his own
The Berserker village is periodically raided by Skin Spiders. Those raids sometimes kill Ghost outright — and then eat him.
Which means a player who never lays a finger on him may still load a save one day to find him already gone, with Berserker activity in the north decaying automatically as a result. It is one of the few cases in the game of the world killing off a leader by itself.
One speculation
One reading holds that the ones who defeated him back then were the Gorillo Bandits: their leader carries a Meitou-grade Exile Plank, whose description reads "the shamed will forever walk the world as a lost ghost". If that was a trophy, its original owner ought to have been a disgraced Shek warrior of some importance. The only support for this inference is who owns the weapon; the game gives no verdict.
