KralReport

English:Kral · Characters

The legendary warrior who unified the Shek tribes and became their first king. The manner of his death became the behavioural template for an entire people — and the prescription that is driving them to extinction.

Kral is the founder of the Shek Kingdom and the only god the Shek have. The world's entire first-hand record of his life amounts to two battered pamphlets: Way Of The Warrior: The Book Of Kral, sold in the capital Admag, and Kral's Last Stand, which describes his final battle[V1 0:03:30]. There is no portrait of him, no chronology, no credible birth or death date — only an account of how he died, recited so often that it has warped in the telling.

The unifier

Before Kral, the Shek were primitive tribes scattered across the wastes, fighting each other and raiding their neighbours. That state of affairs lasted "longer than anyone can remember the beginning of".

After Kral appeared, he gathered those tribes into a kingdom, taught his followers a code of honour and strength, and led them on a path of conquest. The written sources credit his unification of the tribes to two things: cunning and charisma[V1 0:11:15]; commentators emphasise two others — sheer will and martial skill[V2 0:09:33]. What he built was not only a state but an entire logic of hierarchy and a template for rule that is still in use, one that nearly every later Shek leader has followed[V1 0:11:15]: rank is decided by fighting ability, rulers are produced by duels, the weak submit to the strong. And the code of honour he poured into that system was severe enough to become the floor of behaviour for the whole people[V2 0:09:33].

Tip"Kral" is simply the Turkish word for "king". The name may itself be his title rather than his given name.

The last stand

Kral's Last Stand is the central text of Shek culture. It records Kral being ambushed on a hill, a hundred swords closing around him.

But he stood. Unafraid. Waiting.

The book then lays out the whole slaughter: he takes the first blow and two men in the front rank fall; the enemy comes at him from behind, from the flanks, from the front at once, and he dodges, he cleaves, he throws men aside; a blade goes into his back and he flings the assassin to his death; a blade goes into his stomach and he sweeps the legs out from under the men closing in. In the end he takes a hundred cuts and "crosses to the other side, to the Gates, where he lives forever as a hero"[V1 0:03:30].

History of Kenshi is terser: he died at the hands of an army said to outnumber him a hundred to one[V2 0:09:33]. Who that army was, why they ambushed him, and what Kral was doing at the time — none of it is recorded.

That manner of death later became the bedrock of the entire Shek polity. Because the highest honour is to stand against a hundred and not retreat, Shek society ranks itself strictly by fighting skill, endurance and physical prowess[V3 0:03:34]; and the throne rests on neither bloodline nor election, but on being the strongest warrior in the nation, whom anybody may challenge, kill and replace through an honour duel[V4 0:00:36][V3 0:03:34]. One man's death was institutionalised into the supreme aspiration of an entire people[V2 0:09:33].

Way Of The Warrior

The other book, Way Of The Warrior: The Book Of Kral, is said to have been dictated by Kral himself. It is the original source of Shek values, and of the creed that life is short, death is not to be feared, and only glory is eternal[V1 0:03:30]:

This ancient world has such a long lifespan, and our tiny lives are but a drop in the ocean. There is nothing to fear in shortening such a short life… Death is nothing, glory is eternal.

It is worth noting that this passage does not stand alone. The second half of the book is about something else entirely:

In other words, the point of the original text is not abandoning your position out of fear, not actively seeking death. "Death is nothing" is rhetoric aimed at cowardice in battle, not an order to go and die.

A rewritten testament

What the modern Shek read out of those two books is: dying in battle is the only decent end; surviving a defeat is shame; any rational consideration standing between you and death is cowardice. And so an entire people turned the suicide charge into a religious obligation.

One commentator argues that this is a severe case of quoting out of context — that today's so-called "teachings of Kral" are one small slice cut out of the whole of his thought, and the misunderstood slice at that, now used to endorse pointless deaths and unwinnable battles; the real Kral was talking about standing up for your convictions[V1 0:05:42]. On the strength of the text itself the criticism holds up well: Kral said "fight for your people", and his descendants have been getting their people killed off.

NoteNo in-game text states outright that Kral advocated seeking death. "Only death in battle opens the Gates" is a later Shek interpretation; whether Kral himself taught it is disputed.

How he was inherited

Kral's name is still the banner of Shek political struggle.

The same dead man is used to argue for three mutually contradictory programmes — one of which wants to tear down his greatest achievement. In the world of Kenshi this is not unusual.

The site of the last stand

There is a Shek military outpost on the Spider Plains called Last Stand. Aged Shek warriors gather there and then go to neighbouring Arach to demand an unwinnable duel with the Bugmaster — ending their own lives Kral's way. The bar there has its own dialogue, and if the player actually kills the Bugmaster, the barman stands you a free Grog.

One reading holds that the outpost was built on the exact spot where Kral fell; CivilizationEx states more directly that Kral died on the Spider Plains and that this outpost stands where he went down[V6 0:04:01]. The connection is not confirmed anywhere in the game's own text, but it fits both the place name and the use the warriors put it to.
