The Great FortressReport

English:The Great Fortress · Locations

A Shek Kingdom military outpost in the Stenn Desert. It is called the Great Fortress and it is mostly rubble — the only two working buildings are a Police Station and a Faction HQ, and that Police Station happens to sit next door to Flying Bull.

The Great Fortress is a Shek Kingdom military outpost in the Stenn Desert. Reading the Map of the Shek Kingdom marks it directly — that map reveals four locations at once: Admag, Last Stand, Squin, and this place.

The name has the word "great" in it. On site, it does not look that way at all.

A fortress that no longer is one

Almost every structure inside the Great Fortress is a destroyed building. Only two are operational:

The wiki's reading is that it may genuinely have been a great fortress once, wrecked during the war with the Holy Nation and only partially restored since — much like the nearby Shek Ruins.

That reading holds up at the regional level. The Stenn Desert is one of the least habitable places on the continent: no rain, no grass, and scrape the surface and you hit the concrete and rebar of the previous civilisation. The Shek chose it as a homeland precisely because there is nothing here anyone else would want. Aside from the capital, every building in this desert is a military installation — and most of those installations now look like this one.

NoteReading "the Great Fortress" as an intact stronghold will mislead you. It functions more like a front-line position that has not quite been abandoned yet.

Who is here

Per the game data, three squads spawn here:

UnitComposition
1x Shek Gate GuardsHolds the gate
1x Shek Fortress6 Hundred Guardians
1x Shek Town Guard5 to 7 Hundred Guardians

The Hundred Guardians are the Shek Kingdom's elite bodyguards, carrying Planks and Samurai Legplates, and a line that could not be more Shek about it: "Glory doesn't come to us. We rip it from our enemies with our own hands."

What it means for the player

There is exactly one practical use for the Great Fortress, and it is a very specific one: cashing in a bounty.

It sits close to New Kralia, the headquarters of Kral's Chosen, where Flying Bull (real name Ida) resides. Flying Bull carries a bounty of 30,000 Cats — and the Great Fortress has a working Police Station.

In other words, this is the end of the "raid New Kralia, then carry Flying Bull somewhere he can be sold" route. For a mid-game squad it is the best-paying trip in the Stenn Desert.

TipFlying Bull was a devoted follower of King Shager and refused to accept the Stone Golem (Esata) as ruler, leaving Admag with his supporters to found New Kralia. Handing him to Shek police is not a betrayal of the Shek in narrative terms — he is a rebel the Shek Kingdom already wants.
