Post-Ancient WorkshopReport

English:Post-Ancient Workshop · Locations

Two hangar-sized structures, one in the Purple Sands and one in western Vain, and among the few reliable sources of Engineering Research in the game. No guards — just a row of locks between level 25 and 75.

Old ruins. You gotta look at a map, go way out into the furthest reaches of the ass end of nowhere, the more dangerous the better, and then look around for old ruins and stuff. — Ronin Construction Trader

Post-Ancient Workshops are ancient locations, two of them, sitting in the Purple Sands and in western Vain. They are large, hangar-like structures — open floor, high roof, nothing like the cramped interiors of the labs.

Their value comes down to one sentence: these are among the few reliable places to obtain Engineering Research.

The workshop family

The game has four "workshops" with the same function and similar output:

NameWhere
Post-Ancient WorkshopPurple Sands, western Vain
Deadland WorkshopDeadlands
Dead WorkshopThe Pits
Workshop Complex—

All four can be marked by reading an Engineers Map, which reveals one random site with these odds:

TargetChance
Post-Ancient Workshop43.48%
Deadland Workshop34.78%
Dead Workshop17.39%
Workshop Complex4.35%

Which makes the Post-Ancient Workshop the most likely thing an Engineers Map will point you at — the highest-hit-rate lead on Engineering Research in the game.

Why it is the soft option

Compared with its sibling the Deadland Workshop, this site has two large advantages.

First, no garrison. The Deadland Workshop fields a Broken Skeleton and a row of Broken Model 30s manning harpoon turrets. The wiki page for the Post-Ancient Workshop records no permanent guards at all.

Second, survivable weather. The Deadlands sit under near-constant acid rain. The Purple Sands run a year-round sandstorm, but sand does not dissolve people. The Purple Sands are the lowest-spawn-rate region in the game — which does not mean safe, only that even bandits cannot be bothered to live there and merely cross it in groups now and then.

TipWhat actually stands in your way is the locks. Storage containers here are locked at levels between 25 and 75, a wide band. Bringing one character with real Lockpicking beats bringing a squad of muscle.

Output

Engineering Research is the headline and the reason to come. The other items, in roughly descending order of likelihood:

Skeleton Repair Kit, Robotics Components, Copper Alloy Plates, CPU Unit, Damaged Book, Electrical Components, Fuel, Gears, Generator Core, Hacksaw, Hinge, Iron Plates, Motor, Power Core, Steel Bars, Tools, Press, Spring Steel, Crossbow Parts.

The two at the top of that list carry the trip on their own: a Skeleton Repair Kit is worth 4,341 Cats and Robotics Components 2,838 Cats.

Why the player cares

Engineering Research is a gate item on the high tech tree, and it is hard to buy. Shops carry it occasionally, in small numbers and restocking slowly; the real supply is ancient locations.

The Post-Ancient Workshop's place in that supply is distinctive — of the four workshops it is the easiest to reveal and the easiest to walk away from. No guards, no acid, just a row of locks. For a squad that still loses to Security Spiders but has levelled Lockpicking, this is the first ancient tech source genuinely within reach.
