Five ancient hangars lined up across The Grid — three finished, one a bare shell, one sunk. It is one of the few dependable sources of Engineering Research in the game, and the surrounding region spawns no hostile squads at all.
Old ruins. You gotta look at a map, go way out into the furthest reaches of the ass end of nowhere, the more dangerous the better, and then look around for old ruins and stuff. — Ronin Construction Trader
The Workshop Complex is an ancient site in The Grid, made up of five enormous hangar-like buildings in a line. It is one of the few reliable places in the game to obtain Engineering Research.
Its relatives are the Dead Workshop, the Deadland Workshops and the Post-Ancient Workshop. All four can be marked by reading an Engineers Map — though the Workshop Complex is the least likely result on that map's table, at 4.35%.
Five hangars, only two with loot
This is where the trip most often gets wasted: the building right by the map icon is empty.
| Where | State |
|---|---|
| Directly at the icon | Complete, but holds nothing |
| Hangar south-west of the icon | Complete, with containers that spawn items |
| Hangar north-east of the icon | Complete, with containers that spawn items |
| Westernmost on the same line | Probably never finished — a hangar shell and nothing else |
| South-east of the main line | If it was ever completed, it is now entirely underwater |
There are also several iron nodes nearby, which probably explains why the ancients put a workshop here in the first place.
Guaranteed spawns
The artifacts system allots this place 25,000 Cats in gear and 10,000 Cats in items — note that it spawns both gear and items, which is uncommon among ruins. The guaranteed list:
| Item | Quality / manufacturer | Qty |
|---|---|---|
| KLR Series Arm (right) | Specialist | 1 |
| Flesh Cleaver | Skeleton Smiths | 3 |
| Horse Chopper | Catun Scrapmaster | 1 |
| Spiked Club | Catun Scrapmaster | 2 |
| Ninja Blade | Skeleton Smiths | 1 |
| Ancient Science Book | — | 5 |
| Engineering Research | — | 1 |
The location's own article records that the actual number of Ancient Science Books and Engineering Research spawning on site runs between 4 and 9 of each.

Danger
The Grid itself is one of the quietest regions on the continent — no hostile squads spawn in it at all. The problem comes from next door: The Grid sits close to The Crater, which has a very high Beak Thing population, and small groups occasionally wander across.
So the risk here is not stationed, it is mobile. Miss them and the trip is uneventful; meet them and it is a pack of Beak Things.
What it means for the player
The Workshop Complex has one clear purpose: this is a trip you make for Engineering Research.
Engineering Research is the key consumable for unlocking high-tier tech, its sources are scarce, and workshop ruins are the steadiest of them. The haul here (4 to 9 of them), plus the Ancient Science Books and a full spread of robotics parts, adds up to a very respectable run.
Add the fact that the region spawns nothing hostile, and this becomes the safest option available to a mid-game squad that needs Engineering Research but cannot yet fight Security Spiders. Provided you remember to bring someone who can pick a lock.
