Mercenary HeavyReport
English:Mercenary Heavy · Characters
The heavy slot in a Mercenary Guild squad, carrying a Nodachi and wearing Samurai Legplates. You cannot hire one on his own — you talk to the captain and the whole squad comes.
Mercenary Heavies are the heavy slot in a Mercenary Guild squad. They walk behind a Mercenary Captain and turn up in town bars, on the roads between towns, and at randomly spawning Mercenary Camps.
The guild's hiring flow only recognises the captain, so you cannot hire a Heavy by himself. One conversation with the captain and the whole squad follows you.
How they differ from a plain Mercenary
| Mercenary | Mercenary Heavy | |
|---|---|---|
| Attributes and weapon skills | 30–40 | 35–45 |
| Weapon | Holed Sabre | Nodachi |
| Legwear | Samurai Clothpants | Samurai Legplates |
| Shirt | Leather Vest / Leather Shirt | Leather Shirt |
| Footwear | Plated Longboots / Drifter's Boots | Plated Longboots / Samurai Boots |
Five points of stats and one metal legplate. What actually changes how they fight is the weapon: the plain mercenary carries a sabre, the Heavy carries a Nodachi.
About that Nodachi
The Nodachi is the longest and hardest-hitting weapon in the katana family, with attack range 25 and +4 attack. The cost sits in two other columns: −4 defence and −4 indoors.
The Nodachi also does −40% damage to robots, so mercenaries put up against skeleton bandits or Old Machines will do noticeably worse than their stat line suggests.
The Shek version
The guild's racial weighting is Greenlander 100 to Shek 60, so a Shek Heavy is a common draw. The two do not share a stat line:
| Greenlander | Shek | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 35–45 | 38.5–49.5 |
| Toughness | 35–45 | 42–54 |
| Dexterity | 35–45 | 28–36 |
| Melee attack | 35–45 | 42–54 |
| Melee defence | 35–45 | 35–45 |
| Athletics | 35–45 | 28–36 |
The Shek Heavy takes more punishment and deals more of it, and pays with dexterity and athletics. On the march he falls behind the group, which matters most when something is chasing you.
The armour is bad
Like the rest of the guild, their armour is Shoddy, with only a 5% chance of Standard. Samurai Armour looks impressive and this is the weakest grade it comes in.
They carry a Basic First Aid Kit, and their Field Medic sits at 35–45, so it does get used.
Where to find them
Randomly spawning Mercenary Camps appear at Watcher's Rim and The Hook. The standard squad is 1 captain, 2 to 4 Mercenaries and 2 to 4 Mercenary Heavies. The camp spawns camp beds and the player can use them for free.
Bar squads spawn in Black Scratch, Flats Lagoon, Heng, Mongrel, Shark, Smugglers Bar, The Hub, the Waystation and World's End, as well as any United Cities town.
