Iron SpiderReport

English:Iron Spider · Creatures

The Old Machines' robotic spider, a weaker version of the Security Spider that roams the wilderness instead of guarding ruins. It is fitted with maiming devices — lightly armoured characters it downs usually do not get eaten, they bleed out.

Iron Spiders are robotic animals from the Old Machines faction. They are the weaker version of the Security Spider, and the biggest difference between the two is not their numbers but their behaviour: Security Spiders guard Ancient Labs and Lost Armouries, while Iron Spiders wander the wilderness.

Where they appear

Their distribution overlaps almost exactly with skeleton territory:

Ashlands, Cheaters Run, Deadlands, Floodlands, Forbidden Isle, Grey Desert, Iron Valleys, Obedience, The Iron Trail, Sonorous Dark.

They are especially concentrated in regions primarily inhabited by Skeletons, such as the Floodlands and Deadlands. The Iron Trail is named for their presence.

The ones lying on the ground are also Iron Spiders

This is the nastiest thing about them and the part players actually need to remember.

In Ashlands, Deadlands, Forbidden Isle, The Iron Trail and Venge, the terrain is decorated with many inactive Iron Spiders — scenery, not enemies.

The problem: a live Iron Spider that is sleeping looks exactly the same.

So when you cross a stretch of ground littered with spider hulks, there is no way to tell from appearance whether the one at your feet is scrap or a functioning unit at rest. Plenty of parties only find out when the "decoration" stands up.

NoteWhen crossing the Iron Trail, the Ashlands or any other area strewn with inactive units, do not walk right up against the spiders on the ground. Keeping your distance and going around is the only reliable approach — because until it rises, you cannot tell.

Maiming devices

Iron Spiders are equipped with maiming devices and tend to attack living things indiscriminately.

They will not eat your unconscious body — they are machines and do not feed. But that does not make being downed by one safer; if anything the opposite:

Their maimers are easily capable of ensuring most lightly armoured characters downed by them will die of their wounds without help.

In other words: a Beak Thing eats you on the spot; an Iron Spider leaves you on the ground to die slowly. The result is the same, only slower. For a solo start this is a death with no way back — nobody comes to bandage you, and that is that.

Left foreleg200100

Note the hit chance of 150 on head and chest — uncommon among animals, and it means your attacks land on its core parts very often. That is good news: there is no awkward weak spot to hunt for, since every part sits at a flat 200.

Damage formula

Cut = 23 + roughly 0.88 – 0.91 × (Martial Arts + Dexterity)

The 23 is 13 minimum cut damage plus 10 piercing damage. This is the same formula as the Security Spider and Cleanser Unit — the Old Machines' units share one weapon profile, and only their base stats differ (Iron Spider 40, Security Spider 60).

TipA vision range multiplier of 0.6 means the Iron Spider sees less far than a normal creature. Combined with a mediocre 6–12 mph, it can genuinely be slipped past on open ground — the dangerous situations are indoors, in canyons, and in those fields of inactive units.

The Spider Factory

The Spider Factory on the Forbidden Isle has the highest concentration of Iron Spiders in the game. It is now the only notable structure left on the island, and was presumably built long ago during the war.

The complex houses roughly 15 Security Spiders and Iron Spiders, led by a dangerous skeleton called the Spider Foreman — a Screamer MkI with Strength 72–78, wielding a Meitou-grade Staff. It is only a staff, but the long reach lets him hit many foes in one swing.

The payoff is substantial: the locked metal boxes hold at least 4 Ancient Science Books and 2 Engineering Research, along with plenty of research artifacts.

Drops and use

Per kill: Electrical Components ×2, Iron Plates ×6.

Unremarkable but reliable. Iron plates and electrical components are basic building and technology materials, which makes Iron Spiders a mid-game supply line you can pick up along the way — assuming you can win.
