The Spider Factory is a complex on the Forbidden Isle containing both valuable loot and powerful hostiles.

Presumably built long ago during the war, this factory now stands as the only notable thing left on the Forbidden Isle.

First, cross the water

Reaching the Forbidden Isle means swimming across the sea. Once there, acid rain falls at random overhead, Iron Spiders patrol in packs, and a contingent of Tech Hunters have decided that whatever secrets the island holds belong to them.

ImportantThis is an expedition, not a detour. The crossing, the acid and the spider packs all have to be solved before the factory door becomes your problem.

Who is inside

The factory earns its name: it houses roughly fifteen Security Spiders and Iron Spiders.

They are led by a dangerous skeleton — the Spider Foreman.

NoteDo not underestimate him for carrying "only a staff." The staff's long reach lets one swing hit many foes at once. He is one of very few enemies in the game who can wipe a squad with a single blunt weapon.

Loot

If you can sneak past — or beat — the spiders and the skeleton in charge, the payout is heavy: plenty of Research Artifacts.

The guaranteed floor is:

At least 4 Ancient Science Books
At least 2 Engineering Research

All of it sits in locked metal boxes.

That combination is worth noting. Engineering Research normally comes from workshop-type sites and Ancient Science Books from labs. The Spider Factory is one of the few places that hands you both.

Is it still running

The wiki raises an inference: the large Iron Spider population on the Forbidden Isle is tied directly to this factory, and specifically to the Spider Foreman inside it.

Which is to say this may not be an abandoned plant at all — it may still be producing, with the foreman still on shift. The words "factory" and "foreman" are not metaphors.
