A Hiver whose bond to the Queen's pheromones has broken completely, also called a "Lost One". The break is one-way: they gain a full self and, with it, a hollow sense of purposelessness, and most of them end up at the bottom of United Cities society. Beep and Eyegore are both Hiveless.
Hiveless is what a Hiver is called once the bond with their Queen is gone. It is not a separate subrace — Worker Drones, Soldier Drones and Princes can all become Hiveless. It is a condition, not a bloodline.
How the bond breaks
Hivers are held together by the Queen's pheromones. The longer a Hiver is away from the hive, the weaker that bond gets: a sense of will grows, and a sense of purpose disappears. A good many die before the process finishes, sometimes in peculiar ways. Once the bond is fully broken there is no way back — the hive will not take them, and from then on they are Hiveless, or "Lost Ones".
The Western Hive regards individualised Hivers as traitors to the Queen and as defective, and refuses to deal with the Hiveless at all. Even a Prince who is still connected becomes distressed with a Hiveless nearby, and will alert any Drone within reach if the Lost One does not leave.
Life after the hive
The Hiveless have complete free will and individuality. What comes with it is emptiness and depression, and many of them would rather find a new master to give life meaning again. That is why they turn up in such numbers at the bottom of the United Cities, selling their labour for less than other races ask. Others live by theft and fraud — something the game writes into the mechanics, since Workers and Princes gain Stealth and Thievery experience faster than anyone else.
The Hiveless also have one thing ordinary Hivers do not: a name. Hivers have no concept of personal names; the Hiveless do, and the custom is to be named after the first thing they see on leaving. Beep, Eyegore, Finch and Ray all got their names that way.
A word about "No-Hive"
Hivers also use the term "No-Hive", but that one covers everything outside the hive, other races included — and defectors along with them. "Hiveless" is the narrower word: a Hiver who has left the hive.
