Stone Rat VillageReport
English:Stone Rat Village · Locations
The Stone Rats' home village in the Swamp and the house of Big Al. Five riceweed farms, two lookout towers, one hashish dealer and a gang that lives off protection money — if you build a base in the Swamp, these are the people who come knocking.
Know what happens when you don't pay the Stone Rats their dues? You get your legs broken! The Stone Rats run this swamp! — Stone Rat
Stone Rat Village is a village run by the Stone Rats faction inside the Swamp, and the home of their leader Big Al. To find it you either trudge through the swamp yourself or acquire and read the Map of the Swamps.
Where it is
The Swamp is the richest soil on the map and it will only grow hemp — no nobles taxing it, no priests preaching at it, so everyone who runs from a kingdom heads into that fog. Order rests on an unwritten understanding between five gangs. Stone Rat Village is one gang's ground, not far from the capital Shark; Stone Rats can also be found hanging around a bar in Shark itself.
Who lives here
The Stone Rats sit near the bottom of the Swamp's five-gang pecking order. They are markedly subservient to the Hounds, unwilling to do anything that might anger them, and the Hounds in turn describe them as dim and prone to doing plenty of stupid things. Even the local barman gives them no quarter:
Between you and me... the Stone Rats are nothing more than a bunch of thugs. I goddamn hate them myself, saunterin' around town like they own the place. They run a protection racket so they like to beat Cats out of the honest business owners like me... — Swamper Barman
The figure at the centre of the village is Big Al, a Shek. Note one thing about him: he has no Diplomatic Status — there is no talking your way out of him. His personality tag is Maniacal.
Rank-and-file gear is consistent too: Spiked Club, a Heart Protector or Mercenary Plate, a chain shirt, and a spiked helmet or bucket zukin on the head.
What is here
The village is small but complete, split evenly between agriculture and crime:
- Residential buildings x2 (one of them for sale, 16,000 Cats)
- Hideout buildings x2
- Traveler's Shop
- Lookout towers x2
- Makeshift gates x2
- Riceweed farms x5
- Hashish dealer
Vendors and stock
Trade here runs through a Deadcat Big Shop style traveller's shop, and it stocks what a swamp traveller actually needs — food, packs, headgear.
The hashish dealer is the memorable part. Hashish is illegal in most towns, but the Swamp is a borderland where the law is not aggressively enforced, so you can buy it here — and the markup outside is enormous, provided you are not caught carrying it.
Why the player cares
The Stone Rats' biggest effect on the player is not in the village at all. It is at your own base.
Build in the Swamp and the Stone Rats will come to collect. That is the Stone Rat Visit event, with a trigger range of about 3,800 metres and up to a 30% chance per day. The pitch is soft with a hard edge:
Hmm, nice place ya got here. Should be careful it don't get smashed up... Ain't gonna make any friends ignoring people, know what I mean? An' if you ain't my friend, I can't help you against the gut suckin' spiders...
Beat them and the Stone Rat Assault follows. The first variant is 2–3 squads of 5–6 Stone Rats each; beating that can escalate to a second variant of 4–5 squads. If an assault wins, they are supposed to ransack the base for food and break into buildings.
World states
This location is affected by world states, resolved in the order Big Al → Big Grim → Shade, depending on who is killed or imprisoned first:
- Big Al killed or kidnapped while Big Grim is alive and free → the Hounds take over, which fits the Stone Rats' habitual deference exactly.
- Big Grim also dead or kidnapped while Shade is alive and free → the Swamp Ninjas take over.
