English:Rot · Locations

The only settlement the Hounds run directly, up in the northern Swamp, held together by five riceweed fields and one big shop. Join the Hounds and it turns green on your map.

Rot is a village run by the Hounds inside the Swamp, and it is the only settlement the gang controls outright. Their headquarters sits in Shark, but Shark is neutral ground shared by five gangs; Rot is the place that actually flies their colours.

The village has no notable characters — only a Fish and Drugs Seller. You can find it by trudging through the mud yourself, or by acquiring and reading the Map of the Swamps, which reveals every settlement in the region at once and is well worth its 500 Cats.

What is here

Rot is honest about its size: three Swamp Shacks, a Swamp Lookout Tower, a Makeshift Gate, a Swamp Store building, one Big Shop, and five riceweed fields. They grow their own food; the money comes from hemp.

The Rot Big Shop is the main event. It is a travel shop with a maximum stock of 120 items, restocked every 24 hours, open by day and closed at night. Its shelf is identical to the Deadcat Big Shop's, except that this copy exists solely in Rot:

CategoryRepresentative stock
MedicalBasic, Standard and Advanced First Aid Kits, Splint Kits, Skeleton Repair Kits
Food and waterBread, Gohan, Rice Bowl, Cooked Vegetables, Greenfruit, Ration Packs, Water, Water Jug
DrinkGrog, Sake, Cactus Rum, Bloodrum

HeadgearRattan Hat, Sandogasa, Tricorn Hat, Iron Hat, Tin Can, Bandana, Tagelmust, Masked Helmet, Visored Helmet
Raw materialsHemp, Riceweed, Cotton, Iron Plates, Fuel, Wheatstraw

For a player that list is unusually practical: one of the few places in the Swamp where you can top up first aid kits, sleeping bags, backpacks and dry rations in a single stop, and it is not far from Shark.

The other vendor is the Fish and Drugs Seller — every swamp village has one, randomly named and living in their own house. They sell crops, fish and large quantities of Hashish, and unlike almost every other shopkeeper in the game they can be seen out on the street advertising their goods.

One Swamp House in the village is up for sale at 16,000 Cats.

Who lives here

The gate is held by Swamper Gate Guards. They look like ordinary swampers, but in the data they are owned by the Hounds — which is exactly how power works in this region: swampers on the surface, gangs underneath.

Turning it friendly

Rot is one of the few settlements that changes colour on your map because of something you did, and the route is well defined:

  1. Find Ears in a bar in Shark and pay him 2,000 Cats to get your faction "noticed".
  2. Only then will Big Grim talk to you. She hands you a batch of Hashish to smuggle into the United Cities.
  3. Come back a day or two later and pay her — either the honest 4,000 Cats or a short 3,000 Cats (she is not forgiving about it). Once paid, you are allied with the Hounds and Rot turns friendly on your map.
NoteEars refuses to speak to anyone already allied with the Traders Guild, the Holy Nation, the United Cities or the Slave Traders. To join the Hounds, those alliances have to go first.

When three people fall at once

Rot has exactly one town override, and its trigger is tied to the Swamp's gang leaders:

If Big Grim, Big Darkbrow and Big Gray are all dead or imprisoned, Rot is overrun by a Blood Spider infestation and the village becomes ruins.

The rule says the same thing the region says everywhere else: order in the Swamp is not held up by institutions, it is held up by three living people. Remove them and the wetland takes the village back.
