Horrible RuinReport

English:Horrible Ruin · Locations

From a distance it reads "Nice Ruin". Up close it does not. A collapsed village in eastern Cheaters Run inhabited entirely by Skin Bandits — and the one place in the game where a robotic character can safely be stripped down to a torso.

The Horrible Ruin is a dilapidated village in the eastern part of Cheaters Run.

Its most famous property is that the name changes: when the player first sees the location in the distance it is labelled "Nice Ruin". On closer inspection, it becomes the Horrible Ruin. That one detail is the whole place in miniature.

A location filed under the wrong name

In the game data the Horrible Ruin belongs to the Deadcat faction — but the only things living in it are Skin Bandits.

Skin Bandits are Skeletons wearing human skin. They hunt organic beings, drag them back to a Peeler Machine and turn their skin into clothing; because skin rots quickly, the hunting never stops. Their headquarters is the Skinhouse in Sonorous Dark, and the Horrible Ruin is an outlying site they have occupied.

That misfiling has a concrete consequence: because the location technically still belongs to Deadcat, Skin Harvests never originate from here.

The ruin that talks

If the inhabitants see you, one of the Skin Bandits will start speaking to you.

When it finishes, every nearby Skin Bandit is drawn to your position. If you are already hostile to Skin Bandits, or if you attack before the dialogue ends, the effect does not trigger.

Apart from the nearby Police Barracks, this is the only place in the game where that happens.

Why a robotic character would make the trip

The Horrible Ruin is the only Skin Bandit location where they do not use the "kill random prisoner" AI goal, and where they will not put an escaped robotic prisoner back into a peeler.

In other words: a solo Skeleton character can lose their limbs here "safely" and consistently.

That sounds absurd, but it has a use — Skeleton limbs are replaceable, and losing them anywhere else usually comes with a serious risk of dying. What the Horrible Ruin offers is a repeatable delimbing that does not kill you.

NoteThe precondition is that your character is robotic. For an organic being, a peeler machine ends in death, and the Horrible Ruin grants no exemption from that.

Why you would come

There is no shop here, no bed, and no loot worth a dedicated trip. Its significance is threefold:
