Peeler MachineReport
English:Peeler Machine · Game Mechanics
The machine the Skin Bandits use to flay captives alive. Mechanically it is a Prisoner Cage — putting someone in still counts as imprisonment and still moves faction relations — except it works through clothing, limbs and vitals in three stages, and it produces Animal Skin even from skeletons.
The Peeler Machine is described in game as "a machine designed to slowly and carefully remove the outer layers of whatever is put inside". It belongs to the Skin Bandits, who use it to skin alive the humans they have dragged back to a Skinhouse.
It is a Prisoner Cage
This is the part players misread. Aside from damaging the character inside it, the Peeler Machine functions exactly like a Prisoner Cage.
Putting any character into one counts as imprisoning them, and every effect a Prisoner Cage produces — faction relation changes included — happens here too. There is one exception: if a character dies inside a peeler, faction relations are not affected any further.
It also produces Animal Skin — somehow even from skeletons. The game does not explain that.
Three stages
A Peeler Machine works through three stages of its victim and then goes inactive:
- Any clothing worn is destroyed over time.
- With the clothing gone, it starts dealing cut damage to the limbs.
- Once all limbs are below 0 health, it starts on the vitals.
The victim does not have to be alive for the machine to work. Occasionally a peeler bugs out and will not damage the vitals even with every limb below 0, and it stops damaging vitals once they are low enough.
The one you build bites you too
Other known behaviour and bugs:
- Characters inside a peeler can still be hit by attacks. If your swing at someone else connects with the unit in the machine, they take it too.
- If leg health drops below the KO point while both arms are above 0, the character can bandage or repair themselves inside the machine.
- In extremely rare cases a character's model is switched to the flayed version while they are still alive.
- Rare bug: characters inside a peeler are sometimes able to attack others.
- In the final stage, once the texture shows only muscle tissue, peeled characters may no longer be picked up or looted. Those bodies eventually despawn; the peeler keeps working normally for the next occupant.
- Skeletons get a different dialogue pack while being peeled. Instead of screaming they mope about their parts: "Nooo...", "No, don't-- crack", "No, that's my-- snap".
- Characters put into a peeler will normally scream even while unconscious or in a recovery coma.
Where the blueprint comes from
As of update 0.99.5 (experimental) the blueprint can be acquired from Savant. The research is the Skeleton-Human Transformation Bible — Research Level 3, cost 0 — and it unlocks both the Peeler Machine building and the Human Skin Suit armour type. It is sold at Skinhouse HQ.
