HamutReport
English:Hamut · Characters
A Greenlander whose wife was taken by slave traders, waiting in a United Cities bar for someone willing to oppose slavery; he does not take money, he takes a position.
Hamut is one of the few recruits inside United Cities territory who costs nothing, but the price he does ask is harder to pay than Cats — he will only go with someone who opposes slavery.
A man who cannot get his wife back
His wife was taken by slave traders. That is the whole source of his motivation, and the reason he left the life he had.
By his own account he once approached the anti-slavery organisation at Spring for help. They failed to free his wife, and they refused to let him join — a detail players often miss: even the Anti-Slavers judged him useless.
In conversation, depending on the branch the player picks, Hamut sometimes says he knows his wife is already dead, and sometimes lets slip that he believes she can still be saved. Both statements come out of his own mouth, and the game never settles the matter. One reading holds that this is deliberate self-deception by design: a man who knows the answer and refuses to admit it. He never once says where she is being held, only that it is "a mine".
Recruitment conditions
He appears in bars. The most common location is Shark in the Swamp; the bars in Clownsteady and Drifter's Last will also produce him, but at a noticeably lower rate. Other United Cities bars can roll him as well.
Recruitment is entirely free, and the only condition is that the character talking to him must voice an anti-slavery position in the conversation. In a region that functions as the operational core of slavery, that counts as a nicely thematic threshold.
Stats and gear
His attributes and skills land between 7 and 19 with a random ±6 on spawn — in other words, you may get a usable fighter at skill 13, or you may get a recruit barely above a civilian. The Perception, Dodge, Stealth and Lockpicking column runs −5 to 7, which amounts to nothing.
His gear is highly random: the weapon is always a Katana, while the armour can be anything from Assassin's Rags, a Heart Protector, a Longcoat or Mercenary Plate to Trader's Leathers; headgear ranges across the Armoured Hood, square goggles, a straw hat and a Turban. He carries one Basic First Aid Kit.
The conversation with Miu
When Hamut is in the same squad as Miu, who also comes from Shark, a dedicated exchange fires. Miu herself has a history as a mine slave:
Hamut: This smell… it reminds me of her… Miu: I'm sorry about your wife, Hamut. Slave traders are the scum of this world. Hamut: And I'm sorry about your time in the mines… I won't let them take you again. Miu: One day we'll bring them down, Hamut. You and me, together.
This is one of the few passages in the game that wires the backgrounds of two unique recruits directly together, and reason enough to put the pair in the same squad.
