The Vault WardenReport

English:The Vault Warden · Characters

Keeper of Tengu's Vault, holding the only Meitou-grade Jitte in the game. He will not kill you — his job is to keep you alive and suffering.

On behalf of Lord Tengu, welcome to your new home! It's a little cramped, but piss on the wall and it should light up. The toilet is that corner by your feet. Mealtimes are "whenever I feel like it". The menu is extensive — shit fresh off the floor, rotted gutter offal, or today's special, tongue removal. Nobody cares about you. Making you suffer is my job. Enjoy your stay! — The Vault Warden, welcoming a new inmate

The Vault Warden is the keeper of Tengu's Vault. Tengu's Vault sits on the rocky ground at the southern end of the Skimsands, guarded by United Cities Samurai; in practice it is a military prison, and its inmates are presumed to be the empire's most troublesome criminals — the assassin Luquin has been inside for fifteen years.

A character who does not need a face

There is something unusual in the Warden's setup: he has no fixed appearance. The game picks at random on spawn from Greenlander, Scorchlander, Hive Prince, Shek and Skeleton, with an 11% chance of being female. In every playthrough the Warden may differ in build, race and voice.

He also carries a dedicated colour scheme, and that scheme is not inherited from the United Cities faction — it is bound to this character himself. His Samurai armour is therefore dyed in a shade unlike any other samurai's; in a crowd of uniformly armed guards, the one wearing a different colour is him.

The character has no lore thread of his own, only an attitude: he paces the cell block, sneering at the prisoners and at new arrivals.

TipOnce allied with the United Cities, the guards at the door will only warn you off rather than attack, and the player can simply walk in and look around. The inside of the vault is laid out like a police station: floor 0 is bunks and a training area, floor 1 the kitchen and canteen, and only floor 2 holds the cells.

That Jitte

What really matters about the Warden is in his hand: a Meitou-grade Jitte.

The Jitte is a blunt-class weapon whose defining trait is that it causes almost no bleeding and only accumulates stun damage — in other words, a tool made specifically to knock people out rather than kill them, which fits a warden's job description exactly. For the player, the value of this class of weapon is in taking targets alive: hit a bandit leader with a jitte and you need not worry about them dying of wound deterioration or blood loss, so you can reliably deliver them for the bounty.

ImportantThere is only one Meitou-grade Jitte in the entire game, and it is on the Vault Warden. The only way to get it is to break into Tengu's Vault and put him down.

Combat and aftermath

The Warden is a high-level character, with his main stats landing at 67–73 (varying with the race rolled — the skeleton version, for instance, jumps above 80 in Heavy Weapons and Turrets, while the Shek version is higher in Melee Attack and Toughness). Assassination is 35, while Dodge and Perception, as with all samurai-type characters, are low enough to ignore. His armour is fixed at High Grade (10% chance of Specialist), and his weapon is of Cross make.

He wears the full Samurai Armour set: Samurai Armour, Chain Shirt (Hiver Chain Shirt on the Hive version), Samurai Legplates and Samurai Boots, plus a Basic First Aid Kit on his person.

If the Warden is killed, a Samurai Captain steps into his place. That means the prison's administration does not collapse when he falls — but the Meitou-grade Jitte does not respawn.
