A young scientist and medic out of the Empire, yours for 2,500 Cats. Field Medic 40, Science 24 — the cheapest qualified squad doctor available at the start of a game, at the price of being completely unable to fight.
Hey, you there! I need work. I can patch your wounds up, though to be honest what I really need is someone to fund my research.
Izumi is a unique recruitable character out of the Empire, written as a young scientist and medic. She asks 2,500 Cats, which for the skills she brings is very nearly the best-value transaction in the game.
Why she matters
Kenshi's injury system does not let you leave wounds alone — bandaging speed depends on the Field Medic skill, and an opening squad usually has nobody who has trained it at all. Izumi joins with Field Medic at 39–41, which skips straight past dozens of hours of grinding.

The values carry a random ±1. Science 24 meanwhile lets her noticeably accelerate progress at the research bench, which matters a great deal to a squad that wants building and equipment blueprints unlocked early.
Where to find her
She appears in any town controlled by the United Cities or the Empire Peasants, and also in the Town Override versions of the following: Bark, Brink, Clownsteady, Drifter's Last, Heft, Heng and Sho-Battai.
She starts with a Wakizashi, a white vest, work trousers and wooden sandals, with Shoddy armour (5% chance of Standard).
Dialogue
She has the Smart personality, and once recruited she is assigned the "player peasant" dialogue package. Six lines of dialogue are linked to her in total, of which only one is exclusively hers.
Worth noting is her attitude to politics — after Tinfist is killed or captured, she says:
Don't be so naive… those nobles are as fickle as fish. In a month you'll be forgotten and they'll be chasing the next new thing.
Version note
The bar in Heng only spawns recruitable NPCs from version 1.0.51 onwards. If you cannot find her anywhere in an older save, switching to another United Cities town will usually turn her up.
