The Unwanted ZoneReport
English:The Unwanted Zone · Locations
Acid-rain grass hills. No man's land.
The name is the review: no towns, no people, nothing worth digging up — just twenty-two nests fighting over the same ground, half of them crabs and half of them beak things down from the Gut. Anyone travelling from Spring to the Outlands would rather detour through Venge and take an orbital beam in broad daylight.
Terrain
The terrain is Acid-rain grass hills.
Who holds it
No man's land
Wildlife
Beak Thing, Crab, Swamp Raptor, Garru, Swamp Turtle
Notable units
| Name | Type | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beak Thing | Hostile wildlife | Roaming across the whole region, plus nests all over the ground — 22 nests can exist in this region at the same time, and the Beak Thing nest is one of the highest-weighted | These are the real problem here. They are dense on the ground and fast, and a squad trying to walk from 斯托伯的冒險 to The Outlands will usually be run down; unless you can carry a heavy weapon like the Falling Sun, made for Beak Things, it is better to go around. |
| Crab | Hostile wildlife | Wandering across the whole region (singly or in groups of 5 to 10), plus crab nests, with 5 to 30 small crabs in a single nest | The red Megacrab has a bad temper and will basically pinch anyone it sees. It is fairly strong but absurdly slow, so if you have the stamina you can simply walk away — and when they are brawling with a Beak Thing, all the more reason not to get involved. |
| Gorillo | Hostile wildlife | Roaming alone across the whole region, only one at a time | A white-furred giant ape that attacks anything passing in front of it, with stats that look frightening. But it always acts alone and moves clumsily, so kiting it with a crossbow or simply running away both work. |
History
- The Shek have marked the whole south-east, this zone included, as forbidden ground; what earns this particular square its place is not any faction but the nests.
- The Beak Things over in neighbouring Venge are believed to have been squeezed out of this nesting ground.
Building a base here
The channel's verdict: Recommended with caveats
- Fertility The Unwanted Zone has green fertility, and Paul Rogers reckons the closest comparison is the "very good" fertility of somewhere like Vain — good ground for wheatstraw, hemp and cotton.[V1 0:02:48]
- Fertility There are several usable base sites across the zone, and some of them carry green and arid fertility at the same time.[V1 0:05:01]
- Iron Iron quality in the Unwanted Zone runs low, though a handful of spots in the zone still get good iron.[V1 0:03:23]

- Hazards Acid rain. It is one of the two reasons this place ended up named "unwanted" (the other being the wildlife).[V1 0:00:32]
- Hazards Acid rain can be solved with gear: either a Dustcoat or a Longcoat gives a character enough acid coverage, and both are good armour that stays useful into the late game.[V1 0:07:14]
- Raids The factions that may come knocking include the Crab Raiders, the Reavers, the Slave Traders, the United Cities and the Traders Guild; which of them you actually get depends on where in the zone you build.[V1 0:03:55]
- Raids The wildlife is the real threat: Beak Things make up the bulk of what spawns here and they have nests, so patrolling packs turn up; crabs have nests of their own; and Swamp Raptors are no trouble until you start farming, at which point they come for the crops.[V1 0:01:06]
- Defensible terrain Paul Rogers suggests leaving the Beak Thing nest next to your base uncleared: while your defences are still unfinished, you can pull incoming attackers into the nest and let the beasts fight for you.[V1 0:06:07]
- Distance to supplies Black Scratch is not far off. It is a Tech Hunter town and normally not hostile to you, so even if you go to war with the United Cities you keep one large city you can still trade with.[V1 0:06:40]
- Other The density of beasts is a resource in its own right: meat is plentiful enough that you are in no hurry to farm, and Paul Rogers puts the skin yield "on a par with the Bonefields or the Leviathan Coast" — leather to sell, or to turn into gear.[V1 0:05:34]
