Swamp Ninja GeninReport

English:Swamp Ninja Genin · Characters

The bottom rank of the Swamp Ninjas, and the one you actually meet out in the swamp. Their Stealth is roughly zero — a ninja who cannot sneak, but there are plenty of them.

And take only what you need. No more junky trinkets clogging our chest! — Swamp Ninja Genin

The Swamp Ninja Genin is the bottom rank of the Swamp Ninjas. "Genin" means apprentice, the lowest grade in a ninja hierarchy, and this gang runs Genin, Chunin, Jonin, with only their leader Shade above that.

The Jonin normally stay at home and the Chunin lead, so nearly everything you actually fight in the Swamp is a Genin.

Where they are

Genin live in the Swamp Ninja Base down in the South Wetlands, and roam both the Swamp and the South Wetlands as wandering patrols.

That field patrol is one Chunin leading five to ten Genin, and it is tied to Shade: while Shade is alive the squad keeps spawning in the South Wetlands, and once Shade is killed or captured it stops appearing.

Squad size also depends on somebody else. Take down the Red Sabre Boss and the Swamp Ninjas no longer have to spend their strength on their rivals — patrol frequency and headcount roughly double, with five to seven extra Chunin and four to six extra Genin per squad, and possibly a Jonin along for the walk. If you want the swamp quiet, think about which side you clear first.

A ninja who cannot sneak

The FCS entry reads "combat stats 25, ranged stats 30, randomised by 3". Two things fall out of it.

SkillValue
Strength, Toughness, Dexterity, melee attack/defence22–28
Perception, Turrets, Crossbows, Precision Shooting27–33
Stealth, Lockpicking, Thievery-2–4
Dodge, Martial Artsroughly 0–5.5

First, their ranged stats are higher than their melee. That is not decoration: one Genin in five carries a Tooth Pick instead of a Ninja Blade. When a pack of them charges, there are usually two or three crossbows shooting from behind it.

Second, every stealth skill is zero. They wear ninja clothes, ninja masks and the name, and move with the Stealth of a passing farmer. The game offers no explanation, and the Swamp Ninjas' history is a blank page anyway.

NoteIndividually a Genin is weak, but the Swamp Ninjas turn hostile the moment you approach and they never come alone. What kills you is being surrounded by five to ten of them, not any one of them.

Three races, different numbers

A Genin spawns as a Greenlander, a Scorchlander or a Hive Prince, and the racial multipliers make a visible difference.

StrengthToughnessDexterityPerception

Hive Prince17.6–22.426.4–33.626.4–33.632.4–39.6

The Hive Prince Genin is the weakest swing and the hardest to put down in one hit.

What you get off them

Genin are the main source of the Swamp Ninja uniform: Swamp Ninja Mask, Dyed Rag Shirt, Dyed Turtleneck, Halfpants (colored). All Shoddy grade with a 10% chance of Standard, worth very little, but a full set works as a disguise.

Worth noting: Genin wear shorts, while Chunin and Jonin wear Cargopants. Count the legs on an approaching squad and you know how many leaders are in it.

TipThe faction has a colour scheme attached, so everything a squad wears is dyed to one palette. It also means the pieces you strip are the coloured variants, which are different items from the plain ones sold in shops.
