Swamp Ninja ChuninReport

English:Swamp Ninja Chunin · Characters

The middle rank of the Swamp Ninjas, and the one actually leading the squad you run into on a swamp road. He is called a ninja, but his Stealth is negative — what he brings is blade skills in the thirties and the five to ten Genin behind him.

The Swamp Ninja Chunin is the middle of the Swamp Ninjas' three ranks. The ladder runs Genin → Chunin → Jonin, with their leader Shade on top.

Jonin normally stay shut in the base, and the Genin sit a tier below the Chunin (22–28 against 32–38). The one leading the squad you actually meet on a swamp road is the Chunin.

Where they are

Two places: the Swamp Ninja Base in the South Wetlands southeast of Shark, and roaming squads in the Swamp and the South Wetlands.

A squad is one Chunin leading 5 to 10 Genin. Whether it exists at all is tied to Shade:

ConditionResult
Shade aliveThe South Wetlands keeps spawning Chunin-led Genin squads
Shade killed or imprisonedThose patrols stop spawning
Red Sabre Boss gone, Shade still alivePatrols roughly double in frequency and size, with 5–7 extra Chunin per squad

The last line is the one players walk into. The Swamp Ninjas' only sworn enemy is the Red Sabres, and taking off that gang's head removes the counterweight — the number of Chunin on the road jumps a tier. If you want the swamp quiet, the order you do things in matters.

The numbers: a ninja with negative Stealth

The Chunin's stat block splits into two very different halves.

The half in the thirties covers Strength, Toughness and Dexterity, every weapon skill (Katanas, Sabres, Hackers, Heavy Weapons, Blunt, Polearms), Melee Attack and Melee Defence, Athletics and Swimming, Turrets and Precision Shooting, and Field Medic. All of them land at 32–38.

The half near zero:

SkillValue
Stealth−2–4
Lockpicking−2–4
Thievery−2–4
Perception−2–4
Crossbows−2–4
Dodge0.5–6.5
Martial Arts0.5–6.5
Assassination17.5 (fixed)

Stats randomise by ±3 and are then multiplied by the racial modifier.

This table is worth stopping on. The character is called a ninja, yet Stealth, Lockpicking and Thievery are all negative, and Assassination at 17.5 is only enough to knock out somebody entirely undefended. He can operate a turret (32–38) but cannot use a crossbow (−2–4).

Put another way: with the Swamp Ninjas, "ninja" is the costume, not the playstyle. They are bandits in a uniform who settle things at the front with a blade, and the game's own data table says so.

Racial differences

The same stat block produces three different results:

RaceWhat changes
GreenlanderBaseline, everything as listed
ScorchlanderSlightly lower Strength (28.8–34.2), higher Dexterity (35.2–41.8), Athletics 38.4–45.6
Hive PrinceLowest Strength (25.6–30.4), but Toughness, Dexterity, Athletics and Field Medic all pulled up to 38.4–45.6

In a fight that means the Hive Prince Chunin hits less hard, is much harder to put down, and outruns you.

Gear

The full Swamp Ninja uniform: Swamp Ninja Mask, Dyed Rag Shirt, Dyed Turtleneck, coloured Cargopants. The faction carries a colour scheme, so the whole outfit comes out in one palette — that block of matching colour in the fog is their signature.

Armour is Shoddy grade with only a 10% chance of Standard. He carries one Basic First Aid Kit.

His weapon is a Ninja Blade made by Ancient, the second-lowest manufacturer tier in the game: 0.8x price, 0.9x cut damage, 0.7x weight, in models Mid-Grade Salvage, Old Refitted Blade or Refitted Blade.

NoteBeating a Chunin gets you nothing valuable. Shoddy armour and an Ancient-grade Ninja Blade means clearing a whole squad yields a pile of dyed rags to sell and a few first aid kits. The reason to fight them is to clear the patrol, not to loot it.
TipWhat separates a Chunin from a Jonin is not the gear — they wear nearly the same thing. It is that the Jonin has combat stats of 45 and Stealth 50 and will loop around your front line. If someone in the squad is heading for your flank instead of charging the front, that one is not a Chunin.
