River RaptorReport

English:River Raptor · Creatures

A bipedal scavenging reptile of the northern riverbanks and Okran's Pride, harmless in itself but capable of stripping a whole farm bare; clearing them out is part of the daily work of Holy Nation soldiers.

The River Raptor is a bipedal reptilian creature with a rounded body, short thick hind legs and jaws out of all proportion to the rest of it. They do not hunt, do not chase people and have no sense of territory — but they eat anything, and they eat fast.

Greedy devil creatures!

A gentle disaster

The game flags River Raptors as passive: they never attack anyone unprovoked and only fight back when struck. The problem is that they are omnivorous scavengers, and they will eat every corpse and every crop they come across.

That makes them a blessing and a curse at once:

For a player base this is a concrete planning requirement: if you intend to farm in Okran's Pride, the Hidden Forest or the Northern Coast, complete walls and a gate are mandatory, or your harvest will be periodically zeroed by a pack of three to twelve raptors.

Range and nests

The River Raptor's core habitat is the Holy Nation's breadbasket — Okran's Pride. The region has ample water, fertile soil and a mild climate, making it one of the richest and most peaceful areas in the game; the price is River Raptors in packs all year round.

The Holy Nation keeps four Holy Farms here, and killing raptors and levelling their nests is part of the routine work of both farmers and soldiers. Holy Nation relations with the Raptors faction sit at -100: absolute hostility.

TipFor an early player this is a very cheap opportunity: follow a Holy Nation patrol, wait for them to clear the raptors, and then collect the bodies for a steady supply of animal skin.

Beyond Okran's Pride they also appear in Darkfinger, the Hidden Forest, the Northern Coast and the Leviathan Coast, waddling along the northern shoreline in search of Cannibal corpses or Flotsam Ninja fields.

River Nests spawn at random in Darkfinger, the Hidden Forest, the Northern Coast and Okran's Pride, each producing 3–12 individuals at age multipliers of 0.5–0.7. The wandering groups accumulating around a nest can reach well over a hundred animals.

One setting detail is easy to confuse: the River Nest itself belongs to the Wildlife faction, while every River Raptor it spawns belongs to the Raptors faction.

Combat data

ItemValue
All combat stats10 (random ±2)
Martial Arts1
HP per limb40–106
HP pool118–263
Movement speed5–11 mph (×0.6 in combat)

River Raptors are among the weakest hostile units in the game. Note especially that their combat movement multiplier is only 0.6 — once in combat they actually move slower, so any character can disengage easily.

Do not read "weak" as "harmless", though. Their cutting damage has a base value of 18 (13 minimum cut + 5 pierce) and lands around 27 in practice. A starting character with no armour and single-digit Toughness will still be knocked out if five of them surround him at once. The real threat is always numbers.

Drops per animal: Animal Skin ×1 (average price around 240 Cats), Raw Meat ×4.

Larger cousins

The River Raptor is the smallest and weakest of the raptors. Faction membership across the family is fairly muddled: only the River Raptor belongs to the Raptors faction; every other raptor belongs to the Swamp Creatures faction.

Swamp Raptor

The Swamp Raptor is an upgraded River Raptor with a somewhat "sharper" shape, 30 in all combat stats, an HP pool of 140–382 and 50–160 HP per limb. They live mainly in and around the swamp — the Burning Forest, South Wetlands, the Crater, the Unwanted Zone, Raptor Island and the Leviathan Coast — equally docile, equally devoted to corpses and crops, and the number one pest in the Swampers' hashish fields. A Swamp Raptor Nest can spawn 3–12 at a time.

Megaraptor

The Megaraptor is a unique individual, an enlarged version of the Swamp Raptor, living in the half-submerged ruins of an ancient fortress at the centre of Raptor Island.

Mid-tier weapons and armour are scattered through those ruins, but because the site is half underwater the player's movement is badly slowed, while the Megaraptor's speed is unaffected by water. The standard smash-and-grab is to train a character with very high Athletics, sprint in, grab one piece of gear and get out before it lands its first swing.

Raptor Island is nominally controlled by the Raptors faction, yet the Megaraptor itself belongs to the Swamp Creatures faction. It is also the only animal in the game with a 100% chance of being female.
