Rane the GiantReport

English:Rane the Giant · Characters

A former Hundred Guardian whose war name, "the Giant", was granted by Esata herself; she lost a challenge duel, forfeited her place by the rules, and now waits in a Shek bar for someone willing to spend 7,500 Cats.

Rane the Giant is a unique recruitable Shek character, once a member of the Hundred Guardians — the elite guard of the Shek Kingdom.

A warrior given a name, then demoted

In Shek society a war name is granted only by a superior, and only to those who have earned it. The title "the Giant" came from Esata, ruler of the Shek Kingdom, in person.

Later her place was challenged. By Shek custom the two of them duelled — and she lost, and her standing in Shek society fell accordingly.

The game does not say who the challenger was, nor anything about the duel; it leaves only the outcome: a warrior once named by the queen's own mouth now sits in a bar waiting for an offer. This is the Shek value system at its most naked — honour is bound entirely to the most recent win or loss, and past achievements cannot be exchanged for anything.

Recruitment

She appears in a bar in one of Admag, Squin or Last Stand, at a recruitment price of 7,500 Cats.

TipThe three locations are one-of, not all at once. If you cannot find her in Squin, try your luck in Admag or Last Stand.

Is she worth the price

That depends on when you buy.

Realistically: her combat skills sit around 20. That is nothing much by the mid-game, but for a squad just starting out whose members are still in single digits, 7,500 Cats for a Shek who can stand in the front line immediately is a very noticeable jump — especially since the Shek racial bonus makes her Toughness grow far faster than a human's.

What to watch for is her extremely low starting Toughness (-2.4 to 4.8), along with Shoddy armour and an Ancient-manufacture longsword. She is not an instantly invincible purchase; she is a good constitution that still needs training. The real value lies in her growth ceiling, not in her factory numbers.

NoteShek Toughness growth is trained by taking hits. If you want to raise Rane, she has to get beaten up — which is also why many players would rather buy her than a mercenary with better numbers but an ordinary race.
