Dust BossReport
English:Dust Boss · Characters
The squad leader of the Dust Bandits, who blocks the road with five to ten men behind him and asks for a toll. He is one of the few enemies in the game who genuinely walks away if you pay, and the first real fight most new squads run into.
Come out and talk to your friendly neighborhood bandits! — Dust Boss
The Dust Boss is a squad leader of the Dust Bandits.
He is a tier above his men and wears the same uniform they do — Spiked Helmet, Armoured Rag Skirt, Samurai Boots — but his armour starts at Standard grade with a one-in-ten chance of High. On his back is a Horse Chopper, and it is Ancient manufacture 100% of the time: a road-toll squad leader holding ruin-grade steel.
When he comes to collect
The Dust Boss is one of the very few enemies you can settle with money. He walks his whole squad up to you and asks:
- Pay → they take it and leave. No fight.
- Refuse → the fight starts immediately.
For a lot of players this is the moment Kenshi makes it clear that combat is optional. The Cats you hand over are usually cheaper than one round of squad-wide medical care.
Where he shows up
Roaming patrols: leading 5–10 Dust Bandits, sometimes with up to 4 Dust Bandit Bowmen, across Shem and the Border Zone.
Dust Bandit Camps: these spawn in the Border Zone, Shem and Skinner's Roam. Each camp holds three Dust Bandit squads, slightly larger than the roaming version — one Dust Boss with 5–12 Dust Bandits and 0–3 bowmen. Skinner's Roam has no patrols of its own and the highest camp weighting, so Dust Bosses are especially thick on the ground there.
Dust King Tower: he stands guard there in groups of 5–6.
Base raids: if your outpost sits inside Dust Bandit territory, the game sends the "Bandit Demands" event squad to your gate — and a Dust Boss leads it.
Bounty
A Dust Boss has a 25% chance of carrying a bounty, worth 1,000–3,000 Cats. That bounty is honoured by the Shek Kingdom, the Holy Nation and the United Cities alike, so once he is down you can carry him to whichever is closer.
Which also means the other 75% of them are fought for nothing.
Statistics
Combat stats 25, randomised by ±2, then multiplied by his racial modifier (Greenlander or Shek). That is not high for a bandit leader, but combined with numbers and Ancient-grade weapons it is still dangerous to a squad under thirty hours old.
