The Dust King Tower is the home of the famous Dust King and the base of the Dust Bandits. It stands on the edge of a cliffside in the Border Zone, overlooking the river below.

For most players this is the first properly fortified enemy base they meet — not a few tents, but a tower with walls, a gate and turrets.

Defenders can number 20+ Dust Bandits plus a handful of Dust Bosses, presumably lieutenants of the King.

The breakdown:

Cat

Cat is a unique recruit, imprisoned on the third floor — the prison level.

TipCat is a Scorchlander medic from the United Cities. Getting him out means clearing the tower first — but for many players this is how they get their first dedicated medic.

What is here

The tower's gear artifact value is 10,000 Cats, so armour and weapons spawn through the Artifacts system; the guaranteed artifact is a Specialist Tooth Pick.

Regular stock is 30 items, refreshing every 24 hours. The contents fit the tenants — food, drink, medical supplies, backpacks:

Tactics

Where you unlock the gate matters. Picking it from the side of the staircase is much better than standing directly in front of it — from there you are behind the main wall rather than the transparent gate, so you are less likely to be seen and less exposed to turret fire. You can even open the gate from that position without raising the alarm, letting the whole squad walk in unopposed.

NoteOnce you are through the gate you will most likely be swarmed. A low-level squad will be wiped, and once downed the Dust Bandits will pick you up and imprison you in the cages on the third floor. The Dust King may be outside or inside. If he is outside, you can lure him well away from the others' aggro range; if he is inside, you have to fight through every remaining bandit first.

It is possible to claim the Dust King's bounty very early in the game by hiring one or two squads of Mercenaries to storm the tower for you. Unlock and open the gate, walk in with your hired blades, and wait for him to go down. The downsides are that a single character cannot carry all the loot out, and you miss the experience from both the Dust Bandit raids and the fight itself.

Trivia

If you become allied to the Dust Bandits faction — through FCS or the slavery trick — you can enter and use the camp beds inside the tower, and man the Mounted Crossbows on the wall. The bandits inside will say you are trespassing, but they will never turn hostile or raise an alarm, and you are free to stay as long as you like.
