Big GrimReport

English:Big Grim · Characters

The woman who leads the Hounds. One alliance letter and one ambush killed the previous overlord, Hash, and handed her the entire hashish trade of the Swamp. She can barely spell, yet she negotiates with method.

Big Grim is the leader of the Hounds, the largest gang in the Swamp, and a Greenlander woman. She is based at the Hounds headquarters inside Shark, and she is the one who actually calls the shots across the whole swamp hashish supply chain.

How she rose

Not one line of dialogue in the game accounts for where she came from, but two documents in her own hand lie scattered around holdouts across the Swamp, and between them they reconstruct the process.

The first is the letter she sent to Big Darkbrow, leader of the Blackshifters, proposing an alliance. The Swamp was then held by a boss named Hash, and in the letter Grim points out that his behaviour was growing more and more erratic, warning that he intended to move on the casino first — which is to say, on the recipient first. She proposes that the two gangs set a trap together, and her asking price is blunt: when it is done, Shark is hers.

The second is the Memo From Big Grim, sent out to every boss afterwards. The gist of it: Hash is dead, the Stalker Clan is finished, the rules are hers as of today, and anyone who crosses her ends up fed to the dogs the way Hash did.

TipThe spelling in both documents is badly mangled, which is why she is generally taken to be barely literate. Yet within that same text the negotiating structure — name the threat, offer the value, state the price, attach the menace — is remarkably complete. Her coarseness and her shrewdness turn out to be two faces of one thing.

Dealing with her

The player cannot walk up and cultivate her directly. Joining the Hounds means first finding Ears, who holds diplomatic status, in the bar in Shark, and paying him around 2,000 Cats for an introduction; only then does Big Grim have anything to say to you.

The first job she hands out is a smuggling run: take a batch of hashish, move it into United Cities territory, offload it and bring the money back. In practice there is no need to sell anything at all — coming back and paying up counts as success. The full sum is 4,000 Cats; short-change her with 3,000 Cats and she will file it away. After the alliance there is a further dialogue line of her own: if you are carrying the leader of one of the swamp gangs on your shoulder, she will tell you to put them down. Even once allied she voices her displeasure, while the Hounds standing nearby look thoroughly embarrassed.

Combat statistics

Her attributes follow an all-round melee build: Strength, Toughness and Dexterity all land between 67 and 73, and the six melee weapon skills, along with melee attack and defence, sit in the same 67 to 73 band, as do Athletics and Swimming. Her weaknesses are concentrated in Perception (-2 to 4), in Dodge and Martial Arts (4 to 10), and in Stealth, Lockpicking and Thievery, all of which are close to zero. Assassination is 35. Every figure varies randomly by ±3.

For gear she carries a Ringed Sabre on her back (100% chance), the manufacturer split evenly one-third each between Mid-Grade Salvage, Old Refitted Blade and Refitted Blade; her armour is High Grade nine times out of ten and Specialist the remaining tenth, worn with square goggles, a sleeveless longcoat, a leather vest, and a drifter's leather trousers and boots.

The consequences of touching her

NoteBig Grim holds diplomatic status. Killing or kidnapping her transfers ownership of Shark — the Blackshifters take over instead, and if Big Darkbrow is also out of the picture it falls to the Grayflayers. The three events Hound's Welcome, Hound Check In and Revenge of the Hounds all stop triggering as well.

Beyond that, if both Big Grim and Big Gray are gone while Tora the Fearless is still alive, the Band of Bones will seize Grayflayer Village and may adopt it as their new headquarters; and if Grim, Big Darkbrow and Big Gray are all dead, Rot is swallowed whole by the spiders.

Trivia

"Big" is a prefix shared by the leadership across the Swamp: besides Big Grim there are Big Darkbrow, Big Gray, Big Al and others.
