A minstrel with every skill at 1 and a Traitorous personality. You do not buy him to fight — you buy him for the pile of songs and stories nobody else has, and you pay for it by listening to the rest of the squad complain about the noise.

Bard is a unique recruit belonging to the Drifters faction, a Greenlander male.

Where to find him

In bars, across a wide spread of the map:

Cover his 3,000 Cats bar tab and he joins.

What he is worth

To be clear up front: every one of his skills is 1. Strength, Toughness, Dexterity, all six weapon skills, melee attack and defence, Engineer, Farming — all of it is 1. In pure combat terms he is among the worst recruits in the game.

So why hire him?

TipBecause he has a large body of unique dialogue that nobody else has, all of it in the form of songs and stories. Kenshi's world is quiet to the point of emptiness, and Bard is one of the few characters who actively fills that silence. Some of what he recounts is genuinely rare first-hand information.

The price of that:

NoteMost other player characters will complain about his constant noise. And his personality is Traitorous — in Kenshi that is not flavour text, it is a property that eventually costs you something. Do not put him in charge of anything valuable.

A small connection

Wall Man claps at the end of Bard's song about Harmothoe. That line is shared with many other recruits — which is to say, Bard's songs are one of the few things in the game that make an entire squad react together.
