Skin SpiderReport
English:Skin Spider · Creatures
Bigger and tougher than the Blood Spider, yet easier to survive because it prefers open ground. It does not chew your limbs off — it drains your hunger bar instead.
The Skin Spider is the larger relative of the Blood Spider, and the signature predator of the Spider Plains and Arach.
Appearance and identification
A large tan insectoid or arachnoid creature with long, multi-jointed legs and a tiny, genuinely unpleasant head. It attacks with the points of its legs, not with mouthparts.
Where they live
| Zone | Notes |
|---|---|
| Arach | Primary habitat, with swarms of 20–30 |
| Shun | Neighbouring Arach |
| Spider Plains | The zone is named for them |
| Stenn Desert | Likely migration out of the Spider Plains |
| Bonefields | Major southeastern population |
| High Bonefields | Major southeastern population |
Combat threat
Almost all of their damage is cut and pierce. The formula is Cut = 23 + roughly 0.88–0.91 × (Martial Arts + Dexterity), where the 23 is minimum cut damage of 13 plus 10 points of pierce; blunt is negligible. That puts them exactly level with Blood Spiders.
Attributes are 40 across the board (also matching Blood Spiders), with 26–52 blood and 20–108 per body part, so they are tougher. Their combat move speed multiplier of 2 doubles their speed the moment a fight starts, making them very good at flanking and repositioning.
And yet they are the easier of the two to handle. The reason is terrain, not numbers. Skin Spiders favour open ground, so you see them coming from a distance, and with a base speed of only 7–14 mph you can outpace them. Half of the Blood Spider's lethality comes from never being seen; the Skin Spider does not get that advantage.
How it eats you
Unlike a Beak Thing, which chews a downed body apart from the feet upward, the Skin Spider drains the hunger bar.
A character pinned under one loses food value rapidly, and then takes a Strength penalty from starvation. Lower Strength slows movement — which means the process of being eaten is also the process of losing your ability to run away.
Two things worth knowing
Sharp polearms get a 25–50% damage bonus against animals and are the least effortful weapon class for clearing spider packs.
More dramatic still is the Desert Sabre, which carries a 100% damage bonus specifically against Skin Spiders. If you plan to work Arach or the Spider Plains for any length of time, that sword is worth going out of your way for.
The Bugmaster's guard
The 20-to-30 strong swarms in Arach are rumoured to be controlled by that zone's infamous humanoid resident — the Bugmaster — who also keeps Skin Spiders around him personally.
Anyone hoping to claim the Bugmaster's treasure hoard has to fight or sneak through wave after wave of these guardians. It is one of the best-known mid-game gates in Kenshi.
Growth rate
The Skin Spider's lifespan is just 6, among the shortest in the game; a Black Gorillo is 40 and a Megacrab is 100. The swarm you see in Arach turns over far faster than you would guess.
Applying the FCS age multipliers (teen 0.40, adult 0.60, elder 1.10) puts those stages at roughly 2.4, 3.6 and 6.6 days — these day figures are derived, not documented; the Kenshi Wiki records only the lifespan field.
