Research / TechnologyReport

English:Research / Technology · Game Mechanics

Kenshi's tech tree is gated by six "tech levels" and fuelled by four kinds of scavenged ancient artefact — books, ancient science books, engineering research and AI cores. Most weapons and armour cannot be researched at all; you buy their blueprints.

"Bigger and better research desks for researching bigger and better things." — in-game description of Tech Level

In Kenshi, "technology" is not an abstract progress bar but a stack of paper hauled back out of the ruins. Everything you research is a fragment left behind by the Second Empire; the research itself is just the work of understanding what somebody else wrote down long ago.

Tech level: six gates

Technology divides into 8 branches — core, crafting, defence, power, farming, industry, smithing and training — with six tiers under each. What determines how deep you can reach is your Tech Level, and Tech Level means exactly one thing: how advanced a research bench you are allowed to build.

Tech Level 416 hours4 ancient science booksTL3Research Bench IV
Tech Level 524 hours8 ancient science booksTL4Research Bench V
Tech Level 632 hours2 AI coresTL5Research Bench VI

The purpose of the ladder is plain: it locks endgame technology such as hydroponics and automated mining behind the gates and forces you to walk the sequence.

TipFinish the tech levels before you spend rare artefacts. Ancient science books and AI cores are a hard constraint, while low-tier research runs almost entirely on ordinary books — which are cheap and sold everywhere. Doing it the other way round strands you halfway, sitting on a pile of books and short one core.

Research benches

The starting point is the Small Research Bench (3 building materials), which only fits inside a small shack and is also the one version that cannot be upgraded — for a tier II bench you have to demolish it and rebuild inside a larger building. From tier II up, benches have an "upgrade" button and step up in place, with no rebuilding required.

BenchMaterialsPower drawEfficiency
II10 iron plates090%
III20 iron plates1095%
IV25 iron plates15100%
V30 iron plates25105%
VI35 iron plates30110%

Research speed depends on the operator's Science skill. Several benches can work the same project at once, but each additional bench adds less than the last, so a whole row does not scale linearly.

NoteFrom Research Bench III upward the bench draws power (10–30). Upgrading before you have generators and batteries in place means your research bench stalls along with the rest of the base.

The four research items

Research fuel is collectively called Research Artifacts, of which there are four, wildly different in rarity:

ItemAverage priceSizeNotes
BookLowSmallBought anywhere; standard stock in machine shops and general stores
Ancient Science Book5,000 Cats2×2Contraband inside the The Holy Nation
Engineering Research8,000 Cats2×2Specifically unlocks large buildings and outposts
AI Core25,000 Cats4×4The rarest; a finite total, never restocked
A yellowed, torn ancient blueprint with a metal compass resting on one corner
A yellowed, torn ancient blueprint with a metal compass resting on one corner

Books restock normally; the other three are generated through the "artifact system" — once bought they are gone, and shops never order more. If you want a supply, you dig for it yourself.

ImportantBoth ancient science books and AI cores are contraband in the Holy Nation. Carry them into a Holy Nation town and they will be found on you; the consequences are your own.

How many are there, exactly?

This is a point where the wiki disagrees with itself. To summarise:

Engineering research agrees on both sides (19); the rest do not. The reasonable reading is that the two counts are based on different versions and that the tech tree was tallied by hand. In practice, treat "about 150 ancient science books, about 30 cores" as the full-clear target — and note that the vast majority of players never need to full-clear at all.

Blueprints: the half you cannot research

This is the biggest blind spot for new players: most weapons and armour are simply not on the research bench.

Blueprints are spread across the traders of the various factions, and sold by faction: katanas, nodachi and the like come from weapon shops in the United Cities or Mongrel; hackers and the Paladin's Cross come from the Holy Nation; The Plank is Shek. The bookshop in Black Scratch stocks almost every weapon blueprint there is, and is the single stop with the least legwork.

A few blueprints are mandatory for construction and will jam the whole tech line if you do not buy them:

TipThe "research level" printed on a weapon blueprint can be ignored — you do not actually need that level to use it. Buy it and it is learned; quality then depends on the smithing tech you have researched and on your crafter's skill.
