Meat LordReport

English:Meat Lord · Characters

The Cannibal ruler who holds First Village in Darkfinger. Three nations post thirty thousand Cats for him at once, and the notice reads "name unknown" — because he has no name to write.

"Meat? Bery, bery ungry now. Take meat." — the Meat Lord

The Meat Lord is one of the leaders of the Cannibals, seated in First Village at the northernmost tip of the Darkfinger peninsula. Two or three Cannibal Chiefs are permanently at his side.

The wanted notice: name unknown

WANTED: Cannibal Leaders "Unknown" Thought to be some kind of regional sub-leader. Currently controls the cannibal origin territories of Darkfinger. Name not known. REWARD: 30,000 Cats

The notice is itself a piece of cold narration. The Holy Nation, the United Cities and the Shek Kingdom — three mutually hostile powers — have for once reached agreement on this one subject, all posting thirty thousand Cats. And not one of them knows what he is called.

"Meat Lord" is the name the game shows the player, not what the civilised world calls him. To the people outside, he is just "that thing in Darkfinger".

The figures vary by 6 points either way and are then multiplied by the Cannibal racial modifier.

His signature is freakishly high Strength and mediocre combat skill. A Strength around eighty is late-game territory, meaning he swings a long cleaver with no weight penalty at all and each blow does considerable damage; but melee attack and defence around forty, a dodge of almost nothing, and no armour anywhere on his body mean that any player squad with decent equipment will not find him hard to handle.

The genuinely troublesome part was never him on his own.

NoteFirst Village is not a duel. The Meat Lord has 2–3 Cannibal Chiefs beside him, and the village holds a large number of ordinary Cannibals besides. Cannibal tactics are to carry the fallen back to camp and eat them — being knocked out in Darkfinger is equivalent to dying, because teammates usually cannot reach you in time.

Why players come looking for him

Darkfinger has almost no commercial activity, and the only reliable source of income here is heads. Cannibal Chiefs have a fifty per cent chance of carrying a bounty of ten thousand Cats, and the Meat Lord himself is worth thirty thousand. The payoff for the whole expedition is essentially the total of the bounties accumulated by clearing the village.

For that reason he is often treated by players as a mid-to-late-game checkpoint: whether you can take First Village and walk away intact is roughly the same question as whether you can operate in Cannibal territory at all.

TipThe three bounties do not stack — hand him in to one of the three and collect once. When choosing which, give some thought to which side's faction relations you would like to improve while you are at it.

A note on his standing

One reading holds that the Meat Lord's position within the Cannibal system is lower than that of the crowd in the Cannibal Capital. The basis for that inference is the wanted notice itself, which reads "thought to be some kind of regional sub-leader". That, however, is the empire's assessment; the game never sets out the real internal hierarchy of the Cannibals, so this can only remain speculation.
