Polearms are a class of weapon that excels at speed and reach. Most have bonus damage against animals. Polearm and Heavy Polearm are notably the only weapons which provide an armour penetration bonus without having high strength requirements[1].
All Polearms have moderate attack bonuses and indoor penalties. Polearms also have the second highest blood loss multipliers out of all weapon classes (bested only by Katanas, which also have significant downsides).
They are an excellent choice for low-skilled characters, as they have a very low strength requirement and a move set similar to Katanas and Sabres while providing similar damage and much higher range. In particular, Polearm not only has the highest animal damage multiplier but also a high armour penetration. However, Heavy Polearm has a significantly lower (sic!) strength requirement and provides higher base damage, possibly making it a better option for general use.
Staffs are popular among farmers and nomads, but all other polearms are quite rare. Low quality Polearms are wielded by Hive, but their shops don't sell them (they sometimes do sell Polearm blueprints though). Most Polearm class weapons can be found in animal nests as junk loot, although they tend to spawn primarily heavy weapons and sabres.
All polearms spawn in the Scraphouse, which has qualities from Catun (uncommon, but they do have a chance to be Catun quality) up to Edgewalker. Staff/Naginata/Naginata Katana are also sold in the Catun Scrapmaster shop. Other than that, they are exceedingly rare in weapon shops and very few of them spawn as Artifacts outside of late game locations.
