Guard OutpostReport
English:Guard Outpost · Locations
Two watchtowers the United Cities built along the western edge of Bast, one north and one south. They were the Empire's forward eyes on the Holy Nation and the cannibals, and nobody is standing on them now.
Guard Outposts are watchtower buildings under United Cities control, located in Bast. There are two in the entire world, both in the western territory of Bast — one to the north, one to the south.
What they were for
From their placement and their build, the purpose was presumably one or all of three things.
- Recon — watching the movements of The Holy Nation and the Cannibals
- A waystation for wounded soldiers pulled back from the line
- A military chokepoint, forcing an enemy to fight underneath the tower
Bast has the highest fertility in the north and has been a fifteen-year buffer between the Holy Nation and the United Cities. Putting watchtowers on that ground is a sound military decision.
How they stand now
That matches the state of Bast as a whole. On paper it is core imperial territory and the tax collectors still come, but the army never really moved in. After the Holy Army levelled Bast and Endin, the Empire kept Samurai only at Drin; everything else — these two towers included — simply stayed on the map.
Why the player cares
The practical value is limited, but these are two of the few climbable high points in Bast. The ground here can produce either of two armies at short notice — a Holy Army force is 3 to 5 Paladins, 6 to 8 Holy Sentinels and 30 to 45 Holy Chosen, while an Empire Army is Samurai plus scouts plus conscripts. In a place like that, seeing how many are coming before choosing your route beats any piece of gear.
