Turf bandits of The Eye and Stormgap Coast, in a permanent scrap with the United Cities. They are also the rare bandits with real Martial Arts — disarm them and you have the easiest unarmed sparring partners in the game.
The Grass Pirates are a bandit faction centred on The Eye and the Stormgap Coast, with patrols reaching east into The Outlands.
Their behaviour is as simple as bandit behaviour gets: this is our ground, and anyone on it gets hit. The wiki puts it as having "only their own interests in mind as they squabble over territory with anyone who comes in their area."
Two kinds of people
The faction has exactly two character types.
Grass Pirate — 15% chance female; race weights Greenlander 100, Scorchlander 100, Shek 20. Armed with a Horse Chopper, Holed Sabre or Longsword, wearing a Hachigane or Side-Angle Hachigane, a Sleeveless Dustcoat, Martial Artist Bindings and Worn-out Shorts, carrying a Basic First Aid Kit. All stats 16–24. They have a 10% chance of carrying a bounty of 1,000–3,000 Cats with the United Cities.
Straw Lieutenant — 10% chance female, carries a Holed Sabre, leads squads of 5 to 12. Same 10% chance of a bounty of 1,000–3,000 Cats.
Both wear [Shoddy] armour (15% chance of [Standard]) with weapons by Unknown or Ancient. The faction has no overall leader — it is a collection of independent squads.
Spotting them
Look at the coat. The low-quality Sleeveless Dustcoat is their signature and reads at a distance. That garment is not easy to buy — the Armour King is the only vendor — so looting one off a Grass Pirate is how a lot of players get their first.
For the player: an early hard fight
The Grass Pirates are permanently hostile to the player with no diplomatic option. The wiki states plainly that they are "a big threat to low level players". A squad of 5–12 with stats around 20 and a lieutenant attached will wipe a fresh party.
Their relation with the United Cities is -100, so the standard sight along the Stormgap Coast is the two of them fighting each other. By contrast they coexist with the Preacher Cult and the two never come to blows.
Why they are worth seeking out
Martial Arts 20–40.
That is extremely unusual for bandits, whose unarmed skill is normally in single digits. The wiki lists it as their practical use: disarm them first, then fight bare-handed. They are the easiest source of decent unarmed sparring in the game.
The routine is the standard disarm loop — knock them down, take their weapons, let them get up, then train unarmed against opponents who actually fight back at 20–40. It is far more efficient than punching townsfolk and far safer than picking on real martial artists.
Sharing the ground
In The Outlands the Grass Pirates carry a spawn weight of 10, splitting the badlands with the Reavers and the Black Dog gang. The walled fishing village east of Black Scratch lives under permanent pressure from both. Being knocked out around here usually does not end in death — it ends in being sold.
