ErrorCode 0x000000Report

English:ErrorCode 0x000000 · Characters

Old Empire police robots still on duty. They charge anyone they see while shouting "POLICE!", and they will cross the map after you at impossible speed even with every limb broken.

POLICE!

ErrorCode 0x000000 are defective Skeletons of the Soldierbot subrace, members of the Old Machines faction. They garrison the Dead Fishing Village and the Police Barracks, and they charge the player on sight while shouting that one word.

They carry a Short-Cleaver, wear Shoddy armour (5% chance of Standard), and their weapons are marked as Unknown and Ancient make. The legwear is a Rag Loincloth (Dyed); the character has a colour scheme attached, so their armour and clothing are dyed to a shared palette, which in game usually reads as blue.

Stats

Attributes, every weapon skill, melee attack and defence, turrets and precision shooting all sit between 27 and 43, randomised by 8. Dodge and martial arts run from −3.6 to 9.2, and perception from −8.4 to 10.8.

That describes a machine that stands and swings: medium hitting power, no footwork at all, and almost no ability to notice anything at range. One of them is not a problem. The numbers and the way they pursue are.

The chase does not end

This is the part worth remembering.

Their AI package carries an unloaded function called upjob_travel_target_fast, which governs how the unit moves while it is not loaded. The effect is that their off-screen travel speed is far higher than anything they can actually run at.

ImportantEven with the whole squad crippled, or unconscious, they will still cross the map after you at extreme speed. Open the map and zoom in a little and you can watch the blips following you. Stop moving, let them load in, and they will be standing in front of you exactly as broken as you left them.

Distance does not solve it and neither does waiting. There are two ways to end the pursuit: kill them, or get somewhere their pathing cannot reach.

They also prioritise the player's faction over other squads. In a three-way fight, the fire goes to you.

Where you run into them

The Dead Fishing Village sits on the acid rain coast of Cheaters Run and holds over 30 ErrorCode 0x000000 spread across two watchtowers and four Old Storm Houses. Attack any one house and every other house sends reinforcements, so there is no clearing it building by building.

The Police Barracks are the same tenants in another posting. There are three of them on the continent, the loot is minimal, and the usual reason to be there is that you were walking past.

NoteTheir Short-Cleaver carries +20% damage to robots and −10% to animals. If your front line is made of skeletons, it takes more from these police than an organic character would.

Black and white

000000 is the hex code for black.

The game also holds a batch called Error Code 0xFFFFFF, and FFFFFF is white. They are Soldierbots as well, they wear the same dyed loincloth, they carry a colour scheme too, and they exist only in the Reprogramming Workshop as members of the Broken Ones faction. The difference is that they ally with the player the moment they are seen, and what they shout is:

Master!

The FCS names differ by one space: the black one is ErrorCode 0x000000, the white one is Error Code 0xFFFFFF.

NoteReading the two batches as a deliberate matched pair is this site's inference. No dialogue, book or quest in the game connects them, and their factions and locations have nothing in common.

What this is left over from

The Second Empire ran a police service, and the Police Barracks were its local stations. The empire is gone, the order was never rescinded, and so this batch is still on duty in the barracks and the village, shouting the same word at everyone who walks past.

Compared with other broken Skeletons, these are in relatively good shape: they still know what their job was and they still announce it. What they do to anyone entering the village is described as an attempt to arrest them, and once reinforcements are called the red dots on the map are labelled "Police". What is missing is a population to police and a superior who could cancel the order.
