Black GorilloReport
English:Black Gorillo · Creatures
The black-furred, upgraded cousin of the white Gorillo — 80 in every stat and almost no damage output, making it the best free sparring partner in the southeast.
The Black Gorillo is the black-furred cousin of the Gorillo and the strongest regular member of that family you will meet in the wild. Its stat sheet is absurd; the fight itself is one of the gentlest high-tier encounters in the game. That gap is exactly what makes it valuable.
Appearance and identification
The silhouette is identical to the white Gorillo — an upright ape with a fanged mouth taking up half its head. The only difference is the all-black fur.
They always travel alone. The game files do contain a "Black Gorillo Nest" spawn group (2 to 6 nesting individuals plus 3 roamers), but its spawn region list is empty — the nest appears in no zone at all and is effectively cut content. Every black Gorillo you see in the wild is a single animal.
Where they live
The official region table lists six zones, all in the southeast of the continent:
| Zone | Density |
|---|---|
| Sonorous Dark | Primary habitat |
| Stobe's Gamble | Primary habitat |
| Greyshelf | Scattered |
| Sniper Valley | Scattered |
| Stobe's Garden | Scattered |
| The Crags | Scattered |
Those same zones are Sniperbot and Scavenger territory, so a black Gorillo sighting usually means something else is nearby too.
Terrifying stats, harmless damage
Melee Attack, Melee Defence, Strength, Dexterity, Toughness and Athletics are all 80, with Martial Arts at 8, and every one of them randomises by a full ±15. Among wild animals that is top tier.
Damage is another matter entirely. The Gorillo family's animal weapon supplies only 5.2 cut and 13 blunt, and it is the only animal weapon in the game with no pierce damage at all. Since pierce — which armour quality does not reduce — is where most animal damage comes from, losing it collapses their output.
The wiki's ceiling figure says it plainly: even with 100 in every stat, the strongest attack animation lands a little under 53 damage (20.5 cut, 32.5 blunt) against a target with 50 Toughness.
They have three attack animations, two rated at 100 power and one at only 70.
Why it is the best sparring partner in the game
Three design details combine to make the Black Gorillo an ideal training dummy:
First, the defence roll is enormous. A ±15 spread means a freshly spawned one can have anywhere from 65 to 95 Melee Defence. A character trying to raise Melee Attack can pick a high-defence individual and grind against it very efficiently.
Second, it does not heal itself. Gorillos and Black Gorillos are the only two non-robotic animals in the game without self healing. Damage you deal stays dealt — it will not be quietly repaired while you walk back to town.
Third, it has 2 extra attack slots. More of your squad can engage it at once, so one animal can feed half a party.
Note its hunger rate of 5, which is high for an animal. That only governs the NPC animal's own behaviour and has no direct effect on the player, but it explains why they are always on the move looking for food.
Drops and value
The death item is Animal Skin ×8 (the white Gorillo drops only 6). That is its entire output — moderate in value, but eight hides from a single kill makes a trip southeast worthwhile for anyone crafting leather armour.
As with all animals, removing the death items from a knocked-out individual kills it instantly. If you do not want it getting back up, skin it on the spot.
One tier up
A larger, tougher variant exists in the King Gorillo, which is a unique individual rather than a regular spawn. For a comparison across the whole family, see Gorillo.
