A Skeleton subrace. Head HP is only 150 where other playable Skeletons have 200, heal rate is 3.0, and it gains +20% experience in science and crafting skills. Most of the high-ranking skeletons in the game are P4 Units — the Elder, the Rhinobot and Broken Model 30 among them.
The P4 Unit is a subrace variant of the Skeleton. It is impossible to start an unmodded game as one, but through a low random chance you can still recruit one, since they can spawn as Generic Recruits.
What is different about it
The difference is in the head: a P4 Unit has 150 head HP where the other playable Skeletons have 200. Everything else — chest, stomach, arms, legs — is 200, the same as a standard Skeleton.
The other difference is a heal rate of 3.0. Combined with the properties every Skeleton shares — hunger rate 0, immunity to all weather effects — it is as cheap to keep as any other skeleton.
Its equipment slots are restricted the same way: body armour and legwear are fine, headgear, shirts and footwear are not.
What it is good for
A P4 Unit gains experience 20% faster in Armour Smith, Engineer, Field Medic, Robotics, Science and Weapon Smith.
And 20% slower in Dodge, Katanas, Stealth and Thievery.
In other words this is a workshop skeleton. The wiki says it outright: due to their increased experience rates, they are useful for crafting jobs.
The game also features the improved P4 Mark II Unit, a presumed further step along the same production line.
How to get one
The regular route is the random Generic Recruit roll, and the chance is low.
The wiki records one reported trick: set squad size to 3 and then load into Heft and Heng for the first time — this can give you a P4 recruit named Zill. If it is not your first entry into those towns it likely will not work.
Who is a P4 Unit
Factions that can spawn P4 Unit characters: Ancient Ruins (Broken Model 30), Drifters, the Second Empire (Rhinobot), Skeletons, Skeleton Bandits (Elder), Skin Bandits, and Tech Hunters (Bookshop Trader, Iyo).
The wiki leaves one piece of speculation in its trivia, worth quoting as it stands: many high-ranking skeletons found throughout the game are P4 Units. That fact, their increased science and crafting skills, and their more delicate heads together suggest this subrace was designed to be leaders and commanders.
