Mountain DogReport

English:Mountain Dog · Creatures

A larger cousin of the Bonedog that spawns nowhere in the wild and builds no nests. You meet one only because the Cannibal Hunters brought it with them.

Mountain Dogs are the larger variant of the Bonedog. Identifying one is easy: it looks like a Bonedog a size up, and there is always a person standing next to it.

It belongs to no wilderness

This is what makes the Mountain Dog unusual: none of them, nor their nests, spawn in the wild.

The wiki states it outright and attributes their presence to an organisation instead — they frequently accompany the Cannibal Hunters, who put their strength to use wiping out the painted tribes, i.e. the Cannibals.

Where the species is actually native to is never explained. The wiki can only guess from the name and their locations that they may come from the mountains north of The Holy Nation, and honestly flags this as "purely speculation".

In practice this means where you meet Mountain Dogs depends on where the Cannibal Hunters are fighting, not on ecology. Their listed regions are the Cannibal Plains, Hidden Forest, Northern Coast and Sinkuun — which is exactly the shape of the cannibal front.

Damage works out to Cut = 18 + roughly 0.78–0.90 × (Martial Arts + Dexterity). The 18 is the minimum cut damage of 13 plus 5 points of piercing, the same piercing value Bonedogs have — so a Mountain Dog is simply a scaled-up Bonedog in damage profile, with blunt damage low enough to ignore.

The 0.7 combat move multiplier is the key number: they slow down the moment a fight starts, which makes hit-and-run work well against them. They cannot catch a squad that has decided to leave.

They also have no extra attack slots, so one dog bites one target.

What this means for you

You are fighting an army, not an animal. Mountain Dogs do not wander alone. Seeing one means a Cannibal Hunter squad is nearby — read the people first, the dogs second.

They are not especially hard. Base stats of 30, no armour, 70–235 per body part: manageable for any squad that has left the tutorial behind. The trouble is the combined arms — hunters holding the front while the dogs come around the side.

The loot is decent. Death items are Animal Skin ×2 (about 240 Cats), Animal Teeth ×4 and Raw Meat ×6. Two skins per body is a solid return for a wild animal — twice what a Bonedog gives.

NoteMountain Dogs cannot be bought or tamed. No vendor sells them and there are no pups to pick up. They exist purely as an enemy unit.

They used to be ownable

One trace of development history survives: the "Guy with a Dog" game start used to begin with a Mountain Dog pup, and was later changed to the much smaller Bonedog pup.

So Mountain Dogs were once an animal players could raise. They are not any more.
