The founder of modern martial arts and Tinfist's master. He is nowhere in the game; all that survives of him are two claims — that he was never beaten, and that he never took a single life.
Gatwood the Soft was the founder of modern martial arts in this world, and the master who trained Tinfist.
He is not a character the player can meet. There is no model for him, no location, and not one line of text spoken by him. He exists because Tinfist brings up his old teacher in conversation.
The two things that survive
Only two statements about Gatwood can be verified, and both come to us second-hand through Tinfist.
First, he was never defeated. Second, he never took a single life.
A man who pushed unarmed fighting far enough to found a school of it, who also never killed anyone. Fandom adds one guess about his character — that judging by the habits of modern martial artists and of the student he produced, he may have been an easy-going or carefree man. That is speculation, not setting.
When he lived
Also unknown.
The only usable clue is that he trained Tinfist. Tinfist is a Skeleton, and Skeletons are counted in thousands of years, which pushes Gatwood back to somewhere before or during the Second Empire. Fandom stops there, because the game gives no second clue that would narrow it.
By that reckoning he has been dead for centuries, possibly for thousands of years.
Why the name is worth keeping
Tinfist is the hardest-hitting unit in the game, with a Martial Arts skill of 110 — the only figure above 100 anywhere. The source of that technique points back to a man who never killed.
The same shadow falls across the Anti-Slavers as an organisation. They put guards down, break cages open and walk people out, but they do not massacre. Tinfist did not inherit that line whole, as the bounties various nations have posted on him make clear, but he did inherit the art itself.
